ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): So many great films. Ciro Guerra's Embrace of the Serpent on Blu-ray from Oscilloscope Laboratories may have been the film this week that had the most impact on me. It's brilliant - as is the package - and we give it our top spot this newsletter. Sticking with newer films, Mustang - the stunning, Turkish, debut feature by Deniz Gamze Ergüven is fabulous and available on Blu-ray plus Masters of Cinema's Queen of Earth by Alex Ross Perry makes another rewarding Blu-ray experience. It was wonderful to revisit The Ox-Bow Incident in Kino's superior Blu-ray presentation - a masterpiece and a must-own. We've analyzed the new The Seven-Ups Blu-ray from Signal One who continue to impress with stellar packages. The Daughter of Dawn has a fascinating history and we should be very appreciative to own it on the Blu-ray format. Invisible Invaders is one of the easily identifiable "so-bad-it's-good" sci-fi entries from the 50's - don't miss the fun and the Blu-ray provides a valuable commentary. Just Desserts: The Making of 'Creepshow' is an interesting and revealing documentary available on Blu-ray from Synapse and Arrow's release of the goofy Return of the Killer Tomatoes! has, somehow, reached Blu-ray status on both sides of the pond. Go figure. Eric was working overtime with new DVD reviews of Second Run's important Joshua Oppenheimer - Early Works with a compilation of twelve of his earlier short and long-short films, the horror Last Girl Standing, the French TV series The Disappearance, the Romanian period adventure Aferim! and the gay romance Those People.

"All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain." - Roy Batty/Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner (1982)

Enjoy your week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Mustang BD - Full of life even as it depicts lives in lockdown, “Mustang” is a stunning debut feature by Deniz Gamze Ergüven about five sisters in rural Turkey. Confined to their grandmother’s house, the girls bridle against losing their freedoms in a story grounded in both laughter and tears, and above all in the resilient strength of these girls against soul-deadening strictures. Blu-ray Release date: July 11th, 2016

Just Desserts: The Making of 'Creepshow' BD - In 1982, Author Stephen King, and Director George A. Romero collaborated on a feature-film tribute to the controversial EC comics of the 1950s. Told through five jolting tales of terror, CREEPSHOW has become a celebrated horror classic over the past three decades. With an all-star cast, and featuring groundbreaking special effects by genre legend Tom Savini, CREEPSHOW stands as a horrific and hilarious tribute to the stories that helped influence (and corrupt) a generation of writers and filmmakers. Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2016

The Daughter of Dawn BD - THE DAUGHTER OF DAWN is an 80-minute, feature silent film that was shot in May, June, and July of 1920 in the Wichita Mountains of southwest Oklahoma. The story, played by an all-Native American cast of 300 Kiowas and Comanches, includes a romantic rivalry, buffalo hunts, a battle, village scenes, dances, deceit, courage, hand-to-hand combat, and even a happy ending. The Native American actors, who in 1920 had been living on reservations for less than fifty years, brought with them their own tipis, horses, clothing, and material culture. Blu-ray Release date: July 19th, 2016

Return of the Killer Tomatoes! BD - Ten years on from the Great Tomato War, mankind lives in fear of another uprising by the waxy red menace. Meanwhile, Professor Gangreen played with gusto by the legendary John Astin from TV's The Addams Family sets out to pursue his own evil ends by creating a burgeoning army of tomato militia men (who, somewhat conveniently, look just like regular men). Blu-ray Release Date: June 27th, 2016

Embrace of the Serpent BD - The ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in "Embrace Of The Serpent," the first film shot in the Amazonian rainforest in over 30 years. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, the film centers on Karamakate (portrayed in various stages by Nilbio Torres and Antonio Bolívar Salvado), an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists (Evans and Theo, portrayed by Brionne Davis and Jan Bijvoet) who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Kock-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. Blu-ray Release date: June 21st, 2016

The Ox-Bow Incident BD - The Ox-Bow Incident puts Fonda’s character at the center of an episode of Western mob violence that is the result of emotions running high and reason taking a vacation. Adapted from Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s popular 1940 novel, the film was written by Lamar Trotti, the screenwriter of some of John Ford’s more picaresque and light-hearted films, and directed by William Wellman, the director of some of the best films of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Unfortunately, the material does not play to either of their strengths, resulting in the kind of earnest, overly didactic film in which Fox specialized in churning out during the time during and directly after the second World War. As an exploration of the motivations of mob violence, it is certainly a much darker Western than audiences weaned on Tom Mix and Zane Grey were used to at the time, but the filmmakers seem not to know quite how to get their ideas across without having each of the many characters deliver sermons on what is right or wrong about hanging a man without sufficient evidence. Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release Date: July 12th, 2016

Invisible Invaders BD - The Earth is attacked by mysterious invaders from outer space, who plan on destroying humankind. The invaders are invisible in our atmosphere, but are able to inhabit and reanimate the bodies of the dead. The armies of rotting corpses march on the cities, and it seems as though there is no defense. Major Bruce Jay (John Agar) is put in charge of a small, secret research center with a group of scientists, who must find a way of combating the invaders. Personality conflicts develop as Jay's hard-nosed, by-the-book approach to his job -- which requires him to kill anyone who might jeopardize the mission -- put him in opposition to the scientists (played by Jean Byron, Philip Tonge, and Robert Hutton). They develop an ultra-sonic gun that has the combined effect of rendering the aliens visible and killing them, but first they must test it, by capturing an alien, an action that forces them to run the risk of being discovered. Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2016

The Seven-Ups BD - This was the only directorial effort of Philip D'Antoni, producer of the action classic Bullitt (1968). Roy Scheider stars as Buddy Manucci, a New York City Police Department investigator running a task force charged with taking down criminals guilty of offenses that would get them a minimum sentence of seven years in prison upon conviction. Manucci's best street informant is Vito Lucia (Tony Lo Bianco), who double-crosses Manucci by using the lawman's secret list of Mob loan sharks to kidnap the crooks on the list and hold them for ransom. When the scheme results in the death of Ansel (Ken Kercheval), one of Manucci's men, the tough cop and his team, including Barilli (Victor Arnold) and Mingo (Jerry Leon), wage war on the city's underworld. As they bend the law in whatever violent shape they see fit in order to track Lucia down, grisly deaths and a heart-stopping highway car chase along the Hudson River ensue. Signal One Blu-ray Release Date: June 27th, 2016

Queen of Earth BD - Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark phase in her life: her father, a famous artist whose affairs she managed, has recently died, and on the heels of his death she's dumped by her boyfriend James (Kentucker Audley). With relaxation and the idea of gathering her thoughts, Catherine heads to her friend Virginia's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some much needed rest. However, once Catherine arrives relaxation proves impossible to find, as she is overcome with memories of time spent at the same house with James the year before. As cracks in the relationship between the two women begin to appear, Catherine soon starts descending into a downward spiral of delusion and madness. Blu-ray Release date: July 11th, 2016

Last Girl Standing - Horror from director Benjamin R. Moody. After seeing her friends brutally murdered by a masked serial killer, Camryn (Akasha Villalobos) attempts to rebuild her shattered life. Wracked with guilt and experiencing terrible bouts of paranoia, Camryn struggles to move on from her troubled past. Things begin to look up when she meets Nick (Brian Villalobos), a new co-worker who welcomes her into his circle of friends. However, just as Camryn begins to move on with her life, terrible memories come rushing back to haunt her once again. DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

The Disappearance - Complete Series - All eight episodes from the French drama series starring Francois-Xavier Demaison as Bertrand Molina, a detective sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young teenager at a music festival in Lyon. With the grieving family pressing for answers, it's not long before Molina uncovers a number of shocking secrets which could push them to breaking point. DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Aferim! - In this action-adventure set in 19th-century Romania, a constable and his son are hired by a local noble to find a gypsy slave who ran away after having an affair with the noble's wife. Upon his capture, the slave tries to persuade the two men to release him. Directed by Radu Jude. Starring Tedor Corban, Mihai Comanoiu and Cuzin Toma. DVD Release Date: June 28th, 2016

Joshua Oppenheimer - Early Works - Joshua Oppenheimer is perhaps the most renowned of all contemporary documentary filmmakers. His multi award-winning films THE ACT OF KILLING (2012) and THE LOOK OF SILENCE (2014) have redefined how we perceive documentary. His films do not simply record or document facts, Oppenheimer s haunting and surreal films are artistic, playful, philosophical and often confrontational. Thy present profound and ardent meditations on the subjects at hand. Second Run are delighted to present for the first time anywhere on home video, the complete cycle of the early works of Joshua Oppenheimer, presenting a compelling body of work of one of contemporary cinemas leading voices. DVD Release Date: June 27th, 2016

Those People - On Manhattan's gilded Upper East Side, a young painter, Charlie (Jonathan Gordon), finds the man of his dreams in an older pianist from across the globe, Tim (Haaz Sleiman, The Visitor, Nurse Jackie). If only Charlie weren t secretly in love with his own manipulative best friend, Sebastian (Jason Ralph, The Magicians, Madam Secretary), who is embroiled in a financial scandal. In the wake of Sebastian s notoriety, their tight-knit group of friends must confront the new realities of adulthood. DVD Release Date: June 14th, 2016
