ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Perhaps an out-of-the-ordinary selection - this week I'll choose Shield For Murder as my top pick - an essential and brutal Noir - a bare-bones Blu-ray release (and I don't even like the cover) but it was intense dark cinema - one that begs for revisitations. Perhaps in a less characteristic Giallo mood I was enamored by the Killer Dames double bill of Emilio Miraglia films The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times in another superlative, region free, Blu-ray package from Arrow. Those who missed out on Masters of Cinema's Blu-ray release of Jean-Luc Godard's A Married Woman should be happy to obtain the Cohen Media release. I thoroughly enjoyed Artificial Eye's Blu-ray of, one-take, Victoria - an experiment that certainly worked for this reviewer. Cohen's City of Women Blu-ray - an underrated Fellini film, raises some questions but my viewing remained highly impacting. Henry Hathaway's Garden of Evil gets a third attempt at Blu-ray - this time by Twilight Time - and the western is one of my favorites. Curt Siodmak's The Magnetic Monster, now on Blu-ray from Kino, is an oddly appealing 50's low-budget sci-fi flic - a creature-feature minus the creature - but the era and genre appeal is still strong. The King and Four Queens is kind of cute - and a stunning looking Blu-ray for those keen on Gable and the gals. Hidden Fear is a bit of an anomaly and I found the Blu-ray source weaknesses enough to encourage a pass. We've been informed that Paul Morrissey's Blood for Dracula on Blu-ray from Shock is actually a bootleg and we discourage supporting it. On DVD Gregory covered two films I intended to pick up - Flaxy Martin with gorgeous Virginia Mayo has some noir proclivities and Karel Reisz' Night Must Fall with Albert Finney is yet another take on the murder crime thriller. Eric reviewed The Ginger Tree - a highly-regarded 80's TV Mini-Series and 2014's The Mirror - a schlocky-looking Brit horror.

Noir Quote of the week:

Phyllis: "We're both rotten."
Walter Neff: "Only you're a little more rotten". - Double Indemnity

See you next week - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

City of Women BD - Federico Fellini’s epic 1980 fantasia introduced the start of the Maestro’s delirious late period. A surrealist tour-de-force filmed on soundstages and locations alike, and overflowing with the same sensory (and sensual) invention heretofore found only in the classic movie-musicals (and Fellini’s own oeuvre), La cittŕ delle donne [City of Women] taps into the era’s restless youth-culture, coalescing into nothing less than Fellini’s post-punk opus. Marcello Mastroianni appears as Fellini’s alter ego in a semi-reprise of his character from 8-1/2, Snŕporaz. As though passing into a dream, the charismatic avatar finds himself initiated into a phantasmagoric world where women — or an idea of women — have taken power, and which is structured like an array of psychosexual set-pieces — culminating in a bravura hot-air balloon that decisively sticks the “anti” up into “climax”. Cohen Media Blu-ray Release Date: May 31st, 2016

A Married Woman BD - The plot appears to be simple: Charlotte (Macha Méril) is a young married woman having an affair with an actor. When she discovers that she is pregnant, she must decide which man is the father and which man she will stay with. In Godard's hands, however, the film, described as a film about a woman's beauty and the ugliness of her world, is also a biting critique of consumer culture and the media constructed obsession with image. Subtitle Fragments of a film shot in 1964, in black and white, Godard creates a modernist collage that is beautifully shot by Godard's longtime cinematographer Raoul Coutard. Cohen Film Collection is proud to present for the first time in the US this stunning new restoration from the original negative. Cohen Media Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2016

The King and Four Queens BD - The King and Four Queens was the first (and last) project from Clark Gable's own production company, GABCO. Gable stars as Western fugitive Dan Kehoe, who hides out in a small ghost town. Here he whiles away his time with the town's only inhabitants: Ma MacDade (Jo Van Fleet), matriarch of the outlaw McDade family, and the four wives (Eleanor Parker, Jean Willes, Barbara Nichols, and Sara Shane) of Mrs. McDade's gunslinging sons. Three of the four McDade boys are dead; the fourth is expected to return at any minute with the loot from a recent stagecoach robbery. Since no one knows which of the McDades is dead, all four wives make a play for the bemused Kehoe; he in turn responds to their advances, hoping to get a share of the gold. The fur really begins to fly when it turns out that one of the wives is a phony who intends to double-cross the other three and ride off into the sunset with Kehoe. Blu-ray Release date: May 24th, 2016

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave BD - Spaghetti Western veteran Antonio De Teffe (aka Anthony Steffen) stars in this delightfully tacky supernatural giallo from Italian filmmaker Emilio P. Miraglia. De Teffe plays Alan Cunningham, a titled nobleman who has just been released from a mental institution after a breakdown brought about by the death of his beautiful red-haired wife, Evelyn. Alan isn't quite right, and despite loads of helpful advice from his doctor and money-hungry cousin, can't stop picking up red-haired women and dragging them back to his castle dungeon, where his desire to punish his late wife's infidelity leads to some hallucinatory S & M murders. Eventually he meets the beautiful Gladys (Marina Malfatti) and quickly marries her, generating a good deal of anger among his greedy relatives. That's when members of his family start disappearing and the obligatory inheritance plot tightens around the deranged lord, raising the question of whether Evelyn is really dead after all. Blu-ray Release Date: May 23rd-24th, 2016

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times BD - The noble Wildenbrück family is plagued by a curse that dates back centuries. Long ago, two sisters (the Red Queen & the Black Queen) despised each other with a passion-filled hate. In anger, one dark day the Black Queen murdered her sis, and so it would seem their deep enmity would finally be laid to rest. But legend has it the Red Queen returns every 100 years to take her revenge...by killing 7 people in and around the family. Flash to the present: fashion photographer Kitty Wildenbrück (Bouchet) is untroubled by the ancient myths of her family. That is, until people around her begin to die at the hands of a mysterious red-cloaked, knife-wielding ripper! Blu-ray Release Date: May 23rd-24th, 2016

Blood for Dracula BD - Where the nemesis of Dracula traditionally is Van Helsing, it is now a common working man, a gardener, who takes the virginity from Dracula's daughters. In "Blood for Dracula", Dracula can only drink the blood of virgins, and as he desperate bites one of his own daughters, he is send into a vomiting fit, as she isn't one anymore. The story thus becomes a symbolic fall of the aristocracy by the working class, where the gardener in the end kills Dracula, as well as an attack on the moral values of the catholic church via lust of the flesh. Blu-ray Release Date: April 2016

Victoria BD - Shot in one continuous and unedited long take, this stunning thriller from director Sebastian Schipper centers around Spanish club-goer Victoria (Laia Costa) on holiday in Berlin. After leaving a nightclub, she meets a clique of Berlin natives, including the endearing Sonne (Frederick Lau). The group continues to drink and explore the city until the recently-released from prison Boxer (Franz Rogowski) gets a troubling call from a former associate. With time running out for Boxer to repay a debt, Victoria drives the men to an underground meeting, and unwittingly becomes the getaway driver for a bank robbery. Aided by astonishing camerawork, the tension rises to a fever pitch as the group tries to avoid detection. Blu-ray Release date: May 23rd, 2016

Hidden Fear BD - Filmed on location in Copenhagen, Hidden Fear stars John Payne as an American lawman whose Denmark-based sister Natalie Norwick is in big, big, trouble. Arrested for the murder of her music hall partner, Natalie hopes that Payne can clear her name. Following the evidence trail, the detective meets the murder victim's girlfriend Anne Neyland, who in turn leads our hero to a vicious counterfeiting gang, headed by ex-Nazi Alexander Knox. Conrad Nagel, who evidently went along for the ride to get a free vacation, appears briefly as Neyland's American sugar daddy. Given only a limited release, Hidden Fear hid from view until it was picked up for an ABC network telecast in 1963. Blu-ray Release date: June 21st, 2016

Garden of Evil BD - Gary Cooper, Richard Widmark and Cameron Mitchell portray three somewhat disreputable 19th-century soldiers of fortune, en route to California to prospect for gold. Stopping over in a tiny Mexican village, the three men are hired by Susan Hayward to rescue her husband, who is trapped in a gold mine in hostile Indian territory. The threesome agree to the expedition, their interest piqued by the possibility of picking up some gold themselves. During the harrowing journey, the party's already frayed nerves are aggravated when the men become attracted to Hayward. The group arrives at the mine's location--the Garden of Evil, so named because the Indians regard it as the domain of evil spirits. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release Date: May, 2016

The Magnetic Monster BD - Curt Siodmak's The Magnetic Monster (1953) is a truly novel science fiction film, in terms of its rather cerebral plot and low-key, quietly intense execution. As much a mystery and, in its first half, a manhunt, as it is a sci-fi-thriller, the movie pushed lots of suspense buttons for viewers in 1953 and still holds up more than a half century later. Richard Carlson (who also co-produced) plays Dr. Jeff Stewart, an agent for the Office of Scientific Investigation. Stewart and his colleague, Dr. Dan Forbes (King Donovan), begin searching for a dangerously radioactive element, which they have good reason to believe is somewhere in the Los Angeles area. They soon learn that this is no ordinary investigation -- among its other attributes, the unknown element generates enough radiation to kill, and also manifests a powerful magnetic field. Blu-ray Release date: June 14th, 2016

Shield For Murder BD - A corrupt cop creates all kinds of problems in this crime drama. The trouble begins when he kills a bookie and then grabs $25,000. Later he tells his chiefs that he did it because he had to, but as no one was there to witness the killing, they are forced to take his word for it. Unfortunately for the bad egg, there was one witness. Fortunately for him, he manages to kill that witness. The killing alerts a detective who was once framed by the crook and another gangster. The detective's investigations lead him to the bad apple's newly built suburban home, in which his illicit money is hidden. Blu-ray Release date: June 21st, 2016

Flaxy Martin - Flaxy Martin preserves one of [Zachary Scott's] stronger starring performances, as a mob mouthpiece who finds himself in over his head. He's been balking at his shady job as a syndicate lawyer for a long time, but his girl (Virginia Mayo, who takes the title role) keeps urging him to stick with it until he assembles a nice nest egg. Unfortunately, she's really the moll of syndicate kingpin Douglas Kennedy, stringing Scott along to keep him quiescent. When a murder by one of Kennedy's goons threatens to implicate Mayo, Scott takes the rap, confident that he'll get himself off. He didn't count on being double-crossed. The plot traces his rude awakening and plans for payback. DVD Release Date: October 13th, 2015

Night Must Fall (1964) - In this thriller, Albert Finney stars as an innocent-looking but psychopathic killer named Danny, a Welsh bellboy who commits an axe murder near the home of Mrs. Bramson (Mona Washbourne), a well-to-do widow. Danny disposes of the body in a nearby lake and charms Mrs. Bramson and her maid, Dora (Sheila Hancock), into allowing him to stay with them. At Mrs. Bramson's home, Danny plays psychological games with Mrs. Bramson while seducing her daughter, Olivia (Susan Hampshire). As the authorities close in on Danny, he engages in strange rituals with the severed heads of his victims, which he keeps in a black hatbox. DVD Release Date: November 4th, 2014

The Ginger Tree - In 1903, a young Scotswoman goes to join her diplomat fiancé in Manchuria. She marries him, and finds herself in a war zone. Disenchanted with her husband, she falls in love with a married Japanese nobleman, Count Kentaro Kurihama, and bears him a son. She carves out a life for herself in Japanese society, despite the hardships and ostracism she faces as both a Westerner and a woman. DVD Release Date: April 25th, 2016

The Mirror (2014) - Jemma Dallender (I Spit on Your Grave 2) stars in this chilling tale from a news story that set Twitter and Facebook alight. Three scheming roommates buy a haunted mirror on eBay. Their plan is to prove that it is indeed haunted in order to claim the One Million Dollar Paranormal Prize offered by the James Randi Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public on the dangers of believing unproven claims of supernatural phenomena. They set up round-the-clock cameras in the hopes of capturing evidence of something going bump in the night. Their desire to win blinds them to the evil forces they have unwittingly brought into their world, that are out to exact a terrible revenge. DVD Release Date: May 3rd, 2016
