ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It's hard to deny top spot to the Buster Keaton: The Shorts Collection 1917-1923 5 Blu-ray set from Kino Lorber. Such a wonderful, oft-re-watchable gems of the silent era. Now, Dark Passage, may be considered lesser Bogie-Bacall but I consider it premium Noir and am so happy to have this essential of the cycle on Blu-ray. Mondo Macabro gives us 1080P access to José Ramón Larraz's Symptoms with the same restoration as the BFI Blu-ray. We have two highly valuable films from Olive on Blu-ray this week; Albert Lewin's excellent The Private Affairs of Bel Ami with George Sanders and Angela Lansbury). Michael Cacoyannis' Iphigenia is masterfully realized world cinema. Of this 'Time Forgot' mini-genre, The People That Time Forgot is one of the more polished efforts and available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. Arrow give us another totally stacked Blu-ray package with Nico Mastorakis' exploitation actioner Hired to Kill and Kino offer some Brit slap-and-tickle with For Men Only / School For Sex. On DVD Gregory bring us another desirable Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 9 collection as well as bona-fide Noir's Joseph H. Lewis' Cry of the Hunted and the dark Shadow on the Wall with Ann Sothern as an evil femme murderer. Eric covered Peter Greenaway's Eisenstein in Guanajuato, the British TV mini-series Charters and Caldicott, the BC drama Nature Boy and the comedy-romance Sex, Love and Therapy.

Film Noir Quote for the week. I watched the amusing Really Weird Tales with members of Second City.

"I just wanna be somebody.” Richard Widmark in Night and the City (1950)

My very best to you this, always, important week - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Private Affairs of Bel Ami BD - Georges (George Sanders) is a womanizer out to increase his social status. He attends a party with his friend Charles (John Carradine) and Charles' wife, Madeleine (Ann Dvorak). There, he meets Madeleine's friend Clotilde de Marelle (Angela Lansbury). Clotilde and Georges fall in love, but when Charles dies Georges marries Madeleine for her money. He then frames Madeleine for adultery, and marries Suzanne Walter (Susan Douglas), but his social climbing catches up with him after they divorce. Blu-ray Release date: May 24th, 2016

Iphigenia BD - Cacoyannis establishes in just a few minutes of film exposition the restlessness of the Greek armies waiting on the Aulis shore. The men of the armies feel as though the lack of wind were the fault of Agamemnon. The men are tired and hungry, and aching to go into battle. To feed the men, Agamemnon directs soldiers to kill the sheep kept by the holy men who attend the temple of Diana, but the sacred hart is accidentally slain. An oracle is delivered to Agamemnon soon after by Calchas the priest of the temple of Diana. For the wind to blow, Agamemnon must offer up a sacrifice. The armies are jubilant, but what they do not know, and what Agamemnon, Menaleus, Odysseus and Calchas know a few moments after the announcement to the men is that Agamemnon must sacrifice the first-born daughter, Iphigenia. Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2016

The People That Time Forgot BD - They've found the missing link... to mayhem! This surefire box-office smash delivers a daring, diabolical, dinosaur-laden fantasy adventure that's packed with hair-raising beasties and erupting fire every second. When an expedition in search of a lost colleague traces his last steps in the frozen Arctic, the team discovers a hidden tropical oasis in the middle of the ice! As things quickly thaw out, clothes come off and long forgotten cavemen - and dinosaurs - come a-hunting for fresh meat. Soon, prehistoric hysteria sets in and it's every man - and scantily clad woman - for himself. Blu-ray Release date: May 24th, 2016

Symptoms BD - A dark and haunting study in psychological horror, Symptoms takes us deep into the twisted mind of a damaged girl. Helen, who lives alone, invites her new friend Anne to stay with her in a lonely house, lost in the English countryside. The house, the woods that surround it and the figures fleetingly glimpsed through its windows, all seem imbued with a deep sense of mystery. Helen appears to be hiding a secret and the more Anne tries to uncover it, the deeper she is pulled into its dark heart. Mondo Macabro Blu-ray Release date: May 17th, 2016

Hired to Kill BD - Brian Thompson, the bad guy from tons of movies, is Frank Ryan – the hero! He’s a mercenary, and the best there is. One day a shady government guy, Thomas (George Kennedy) contacts him with a new mission: to free (or kill) an imprisoned rebel leader, just to create a revolution in the little republic of Cypra. The president of this banana republic is Michael Bartos (the one and only Oliver Reed), a guy with a big moustache and an even bigger appétit for women! Which fits great into the plan, because Frank Ryan is going under-cover as a gay fashion designer and his team is five female mercenaries – ready to kill… and look sexy in that disgusting early nineties way! Blu-ray Release date: May 16th-17th, 2016

Dark Passage BD - Bogey's on the lam and Bacall's at his side in Dark Passage, Delmer Daves' stylish film-noir thriller that's the third of four films Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made together. Bogart is Vincent Parry, a prison escapee framed for murder who emerges from plastic surgery with a new face. Bacall is Irene Jansen, Vincent's lone ally. In a supporting role, Agnes Moorehead portrays Madge, a venomous harpy who finds pleasure in the unhappiness of others. The chemistry of the leads is undeniable, and they augment it here with exceptional tenderness. Exceptional, too, are the atmospheric San Francisco locations and the imaginative camera work that shows Vincent's point of view - but not his face - until the bandages are removed. Lest Irene get ideas, the post-surgery Vincent tells her: "Don't change yours. I like it just as it is." So do we. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2016

Buster Keaton: The Shorts Collection 1917-1923 BD - As new generations of viewers discover the magic of silent cinema, Buster Keaton has emerged as one of the era's most admired and respected artists. Behind the deadpan expression and trademark porkpie hat was a filmmaking genius who conceived and engineered some of the most breathtaking stunts and feats of visual trickery, while never losing sight of slapstick cinema s primary objective: laughter. Produced by Lobster Films, BUSTER KEATON: THE SHORTS COLLECTION includes all 32 of Keaton's extant silent shorts (thirteen of which were produced in collaborations with comedians Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle and Al St. John). These 2K restorations were performed utilizing archival film elements from around the world, and promises to be the definitive representation of Keaton's early career. Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2016

For Men Only / School For Sex BD - Before becoming the director of some of British cinema's most gruesome horror films (such as Frightmare, House of Mortal Sin, and The Flesh and Blood Show), Pete Walker was a pioneer of the distinctively British sexploitation genre known as slap and tickle. As the codes of censorship began to relax in the mid-1960s, Walker was among the few enterprising filmmakers brazen enough to cater to the public's appetite for sexploitation, first as a burlesque club comedian, then as the producer of 8mm stag films for the collector's market (visually stark and gritty, but relatively tame by today's standards). Eventually, Walker made the transition to theatrical films, and his long and tumultuous career as a director was set in motion. An extended short, FOR MEN ONLY explores the naughty goings-on behind the scenes at the Puritan Magazine Group, a family-friendly publishing company that hides a tantalizing secret. In SCHOOL FOR SEX a smash hit when it appeared on the screens in London's West End a wealthy playboy (Derek Aylward) opens a finishing school for devious young women. This edition presents the standard UK cut, as well as more explicit nude scenes intended for release in more sexually liberated markets. Blu-ray Release date: May 17th, 2016

Really Weird Tales - Top comedic talent hits new heights of zaniness in this three-episode parody of classic Sci-Fi shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Joe Flaherty (SCTV, Used Cars) hosts this wonderfully clever, bizarre and delightfully funny Really Weird Tales. (All's Well That Ends Strange) A third-rate lounge performer (Martin Short, ¡Three Amigos!) thinks he's made the big time through his friendship with a girlie magazine publisher, but soon he discovers what's really behind those buxom bodies and sexy smiles - Directed by Paul Lynch (Prom Night). (Cursed With Charisma) In the failing town of Fitchville, a mysterious stranger (John Candy, Delirious) stirs things up with a no money down real estate boom, but in his wake come two aliens with plans of their own for the place - Directed by Don McBrearty (Murdoch Mysteries). In (I'll Die Loving), Catherine O'Hara (Home Alone) portrays a woman with a serious problem. Everyone she loves explodes. Will she find a cure, or will all her romances literally go up in smoke? - Directed by John Blanchard (SCTV, The Kids in the Hall). DVD Release Date: June 28th, 2016

Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 9 - Return with us now to those naughty days of yesteryear in this ninth volume of Forbidden Hollywood, containing a quartet of pre-Code wonders plus a special post-Code bonus film! Joan Blondell stars as a free-wheeling chorus girl who hooks up with the ultimate hick (Eric Linden) in Mervyn LeRoy's Big City Blues (with a young Humphrey Bogart!). Richard Dix stars as one cool convict working the road crew for a corrupt warden in Rowland Brown's Hell's Highway. Bette Davis utters the immortal "I'd love to kiss you, but I just washed my hair" to Richard Barthelmess in Michael Curtiz's The Cabin in the Cotton. Myrna Loy stars as a writer with extramarital designs in Harry Beaumont's When Ladies Meet. Finally, pre-Code favorites Pat O'Brien and Ann Dvorak spice up the proceedings in the tale of a Second Avenue auctioneer (O'Brien) who gets played by a society grifter (Claire Dodd) in Robert Florey's I Sell Anything. DVD Release Date: October 27th, 2015

Cry of the Hunted - On the whole, the MGM B product of the 1950s contained some of the studio's best-ever "small" pictures. Filmed on location in the Louisana swamplands, Cry of the Hunted boils down to an extended chase, with escaped convict Vittorio Gassman as the fox and sheriff Barry Sullivan as the hound. Sullivan's deputy William Conrad secretly hopes that Gassman will get away, so that he, Conrad, can step into his boss' job. Polly Bergen is the requisite love interest, effectively deglamourized to fit in with her soggy surroundings. Cry of the Hunted is directed with flair by Joseph H. Lewis, who always managed to rise above the slimmest of budgets and the barest of production values. DVD Release Date: October 13th, 2015

Shadow on the Wall - A murder is witnessed by the victim's little daughter (Gigi Perreau), who immediately goes into a state of shock. All the girl has seen is the shadow of her mother's killer, but the audience knows that the murderer is Ann Sothern. At first Sothern is secure that the girl will never be able to identify her, but as the child shows signs of recovering, Sothern panics. Though the murder was unintentional and the killer is quite fond of the little girl, she nonetheless begins scheming to put the potential witness out of the way. Quite tense at times, especially in the last scene, Shadow on the Wall represents one of the few unsympathetic performances by the otherwise likable Ann Sothern. DVD Release Date: October 13th, 2015

Eisenstein in Guanajuato - In 1931, at the height of his artistic powers, Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein travels to Mexico to shoot a new film to be titled Que Viva Mexico. Freshly rejected by Hollywood and under increasing pressure to return to Stalinist Russia, Eisenstein arrives at the city of Guanajuato. Chaperoned by his guide Palomino Cañedo, he vulnerably experiences the ties between Eros and Thanatos, sex and death, happy to create their effects in cinema, troubled to suffer them in life. Peter Greenaway's film explores the mind of a creative genius facing the desires and fears of love, sex and death through ten passionate days that helped shape the rest of the career of one of the greatest masters of cinema. DVD Release Date: May 10th, 2016

Charters and Caldicott - The story shows the pair in their retirement. Caldicott lives in the splendid Viceroy Court in Marylebone, whilst Charters is a widower living in a country cottage near Reigate, travelling up to his Pall Mall club on a Green Line bus (hailing it on the street as if it were a taxi). When a young girl is found murdered in Caldicott's flat, Charters and Caldicott forsake their regular Friday lunch and cinema visit to involve themselves in solving the crime. DVD Release Date: April 25th, 2016

Nature Boy - Lee Ingleby gives a performance of thoughtful intensity as David, the titular Nature Boy in this BBC drama which combines a personal quest for an absent father with contemporary environmental themes. The first episode finds 17-year-old David in care, illustrating his love of animals and the peace he finds at a nearby wildlife reserve. Following shocking violence, and haunted by visions (recalling the strongly environmental Edge of Darkness) of his father (Paul McGann), David goes on a modern-day odyssey throughout which, like Tom Jones before him, women find his naïve innocent charm irresistible. David though, falls for environmental activist Jenny (Joanne Froggatt) and becomes involved with industrial pollution and the battle to save an ancient woodland. After the excellence of the first three episodes, the finale moves into not entirely convincing science fiction territory, and offers a resolution which raises as many questions as it answers. Nevertheless Nature Boy is an atmospheric, moving rite of passage, with something of the feel of Kes to it, which avoids simple-minded polemics, and packs a raw edge (and language) that some will find shocking. DVD Release Date: April 25th, 2016

Sex, Love and Therapy - Fired from her sales job in Japan for sleeping with her most lucrative clients ("This is not a geisha house"), sex mad Judith (Sophie Marceau) returns to Paris and considers a change of vocations. Late for an interview as a dental assistant, Judith runs into Lambert (singer Patrick Bruel) who just happens to need a student trainee replacement for his tandem couples therapy practice. A former pilot who lost his job due to his sex addition, Lambert has been attending an abstinence support group and finds himself severely tempted by Judith's outgoing manner (and her green shoes). As therapists, the two manage to balance each other out with her reducing every issue to sex and him so eager to look past physical needs for the emotional; but as potential romantic partners, they are a disaster.
