ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey):  I loved seeing Mario Bava's Kill, Baby... Kill! on Blu-ray with the, previously elusive, Tim Lucas commentary - now offered by Koch Media in Germany. Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession from Elephant Films is beautiful on, region FREE, Blu-ray. Lasse Hallström's My Life As a Dog is a brilliant film experience now available on Arrow Blu-ray. Richard Fleischer's See No Evil, with Mia Farrow, is a gripping thriller and a worthwhile viewing on Blu-ray from Carlotta out of France. Dario Argento's Phenomena gets a 4K restoration on Blu-ray with a new audio commentary by Troy Howarth and it's a wonderful reason to revisit this horror. Things to Come has another fabulous performance from Isabelle Huppert and is available on Blu-ray in Region 'A'. I enjoyed 1933's The Vampire Bat - a 'B' horror with many of the desirable vampirism conventions, on Film Detective Blu-ray. DVDs next week...

The Vampire Bat BD - When corpses drained of blood begin to show up in a European village, town elders suspect a vampire on the loose. Policeman Karl Brettschneider (Melvyn Douglas) doubts the existence of vampires, but Dr. Otto von Niemann (Lionel Atwill) argues to the contrary. Fingers point at the village idiot, Herman Gleib (Dwight Frye), but after local vigilantes get him out of the picture, the killings continue. Brettschneider then tries to keep a cool head as he searches for possibly supernatural answers. Blu-ray Release date: April 24th, 2017

Kill, Baby... Kill! BD - This oppressive and visually overwhelming exercise in the conjuring of atmosphere allowed Mario Bava to crank the gothic stylistic tendencies of Black Sunday into overdrive, finally permitting him to churn out scene after scene of hallucinatory intensity with only the barest threads of a plot to hold it all together. The avenging demonic forces of his past films have been distilled here into the single, chilling image of a ghostly young girl, rolling a sinister pale ball down hallways and street corners as she drives those around her to certain death. Rarely has a more haunting or unforgettable specter graced the horror cinema, and even had he never made another film after this, Bava would have already proven himself as a master filmmaker. Blu-ray Release date: April 13th, 2017

See No Evil (Mia Farrow) BD - Sarah, played by Mia Farrow, is a young English woman who had been struck blind after a horse-riding accident, and has just returned to her country home to rejoin her aunt, uncle and younger cousin. As she learns to cope with her blindness, she reunites with her boyfriend, Steve, even going on a horseback ride into the countryside with him. But when she returns from riding that one day, something isn’t quite right. Unbeknownst to Sarah, the home has been broken into and her family has been murdered by a cold-blooded killer. Blu-ray Release date: November 9th, 2016

Things to Come (Isabelle Huppert) BD - What happens when the life you ve worked so hard to build falls apart all at once? Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert, in a radiant performance) is a philosophy teacher with a seemingly settled existence, juggling a rich life of the mind with the day-to-day demands of career and family (including frequent visits to her drama queen mother, played by the legendary Édith Scob). But beginning with the bombshell revelation that her husband of twenty-five years is leaving her, one by one the pillars of Nathalie s life start to crumble. For the first time in ages, she finds herself adrift, but also with a newfound sense of liberation. With nothing to hold her back, Nathalie sets out to define this new phase of her life and to rediscover herself. Winner of the Best Director award at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, the new film from Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden) is an uncommonly intelligent, soul-searching look at what it means to create a life of one's own. My Life As a Dog BD - My Life as a Dog (Mitt liv som hund) tells the story of Ingemar, a twelve-year-old from a working-class family sent to live with his uncle in a country village when his mother falls ill. There, with the help of the warmhearted eccentrics who populate the town, the boy finds both refuge from his misfortunes and unexpected adventure. Featuring an incredibly mature and unaffected performance by the young Anton Glanzelius, this film is a beloved and bittersweet evocation of the struggles and joys of childhood from Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallström. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: May 5th, 2017

Phenomena BD - Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly, Labyrinth), daughter of a world-renowned movie star, arrives in the so-called Swiss Transylvania to attend an exclusive girls school. However, a vicious killer is targeting the pupils, and sleepwalker Jennifer finds herself in the assassin s headlights when her nocturnal wanderings cause her to witness the death of a fellow pupil. Aided by paraplegic etymologist John McGregor (Donald Pleasence, Halloween) and her own uncanny ability to communicate telepathically with insects, Jennifer sets out to track down the killer before she herself becomes the latest victim... Blu-ray Release date: May 8th, 2017

Magnificent Obsession BD - Reckless playboy Bob Merrick (Rock Hudson, in his breakthrough role) crashes his speedboat, requiring emergency attention from the town’s only resuscitator—at the very moment that beloved local Dr. Phillips has a heart attack and dies waiting for the life-saving device. Thus begins one of Douglas Sirk’s most flamboyant master classes in melodrama, a delirious Technicolor mix of the sudsy and the spiritual in which Bob and the doctor’s widow, Helen (Jane Wyman), find themselves inextricably linked amid a series of increasingly wild twists, turns, trials, and tribulations. For this release, Criterion also presents John M. Stahl’s 1935 film version of the Lloyd C. Douglas novel, starring Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor. Blu-ray Release date: April 4th, 2017
