ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was quite impressed this week with my viewing of Tran's masterpiece The Scent of Green Papaya in 1080P by Lorber Films. As well as the detailed and brighter image the lossless audio supported the film so well. After that I give the nod to Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl via a magnificent Criterion Blu-ray presentation. Both are essential in my opinion. Jonathan Demme's Something Wild was a pure delight in the magnificent HD transfer - as was the luscious What Dreams May Come on Blu-ray. For decent feel-good cinema I had some nostalgic pleasure from All the Right Moves with Master Cruise. Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night didn't produce the most dramatic upgrade in the superior format but no question it exported the best home theater viewing experience of that masterful work to date. Twelve O'Clock High is such a great war film and it's nice to see Twenty Century Fox choose it for upgrade to HD despite its modest appearance. Criterion's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has some competition for that film by the incredibly reasonable Universal Blu-ray although the Criterion scoops the supplements award. Speaking of low price - Roger Corman's The Terror with a more youthful Jack should be considered fair value less than $12. On to DVD and sticking with Corman - The Ron Howard Action Pack is a decent double feature for that, often sought, drive-in aura. But I am most keen on the Warner Archive vintage B-esque films that Gregory covered including Destination Murder, the mysteriously titled The Tattooed Stranger, the noir-leaning Bodyguard and Olivia de Havilland in Libel. Settle in for some late night popcorn. And Midnight Madness is where Sledgehammer will remain relegated to. Lastly some very positive vibes emanate from Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. I think a lot of our community would enjoy it's arthouse/musical drives. Ohhh, aside from Dyan's Canons you can probably pass on Such Good Friends.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench - Guy and Madeline have been dating for three months, but the excitement of first love has faded. When another woman catches Guy’s eye, sparks fly—spelling the end of Guy and Madeline’s romance. But when things don’t work out quite as planned, Guy must decide whether to try to win Madeline back—even if it may be too late. Their story unfolds in a world of jazz and tap, featuring original music composed by Justin Hurwitz and recorded by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra. DVD Release Date: May 3rd, 2011

Twelve O'Clock High BD - Hard-as-nails World War II Gen. Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) must turn a discouraged group of American bomber pilots into heroes. Along the way, the once-alienated general comes to view the men as family. No longer a heartless commander, Savage -- with the aid of his loyal adjutant Maj. Harvey Stovall (Dean Jagger) -- learns how difficult true leadership really is. Director Henry King's Oscar-winning war drama boasts actual air combat footage.
Blu-ray Release date: May 3rd, 2011

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas BD - “We were somewhere around Barstow when the drugs began to take hold.” It is 1971, and journalist Raoul Duke barrels towards Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, accompanied by a trunkful of contraband and his slightly unhinged Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo. But what is ostensibly a cut-and-dried journalistic endeavor quickly descends into a feverish psychedelic odyssey and an excoriating dissection of the American way of life. Director Terry Gilliam and an all-star cast (headlined by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro) show no mercy in bringing Dr. Hunter S, Thompson’s legendary Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to the screen, creating a film both hilarious and savage.
Blu-ray Release Date: April 26th, 2011

Something Wild BD - A straitlaced businessman meets a quirky, free-spirited woman at a downtown New York greasy spoon. Her offer of a ride back to his office results in a lunchtime motel rendezvous—just the beginning of a capricious interstate road trip that brings the two face-to-face with their hidden selves. Featuring a killer soundtrack and electric performances from Jeff Daniels (Terms of Endearment, The Squid and the Whale), Melanie Griffith (Body Double, Working Girl), and Ray Liotta (Field of Dreams, Goodfellas), Something Wild, directed by oddball American auteur Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense, The Silence of the Lambs), is both a kinky comic thriller and a radiantly off-kilter love story.
Blu-ray Release date: May 10th, 2011

The Tattooed Stranger - Cops swarm a Central Park crime scene where a cold corpse sits in a hot car. The victim is a Jane Doe, shotgunned elsewhere and driven to the park in the stolen sedan. Veteran cop Corrigan (Walter Kinsella) and Tobin (John Miles), a university-trained rookie Corrigan dismisses as “Louis Pasteur,” are charged with finding both whodunit and who the victim is. And from a tattoo on the victim’s arm to sand-packed shotgun casings that defy ballistics analysis to a blade of a rare type of grass found in the car, the cops pull a case together. Science of the era does a ridealong with our detective heroes in this trim yet event-packed B-movie police procedural directed by Edward J. Montagne, producer of the Man Against Crime TV series. DVD Release Date: February 22nd, 2011

Libel - With a lovely wife and a resplendent manor that’s a de rigueur stop on tours of England’s stately homes, Sir Mark Loddon leads an enviable life. Then a newspaper charges that Loddon was killed during a wartime escape from a POW camp and a look-alike has since ruled the baronet’s realm. Outraged, Loddon sues for libel, setting in motion revelations of war, memory, trauma and deception that causes Lady Loddon (Olivia de Havilland) and Sir Mark (Dirk Bogarde) himself to question his identity. Anthony Asquith (
The Browning Version, The VIPs) guides this star-infused courtroom drama based on a Broadway hit and enhanced by the maneuvering of Robert Morley and Wilfred Hyde-White in the roles of collegial yet cunning rival barristers. DVD Release Date: January 25th, 2011

Destination Murder - The cops have no interest in any of the suspects in the line up. Laura Mansfield (Joyce MacKenzie) does. She’s has a hunch one of them is the person she saw running away after her father was gunned down. The law turns the man free. Laura, a college student with no training as a detective, turns herself loose on the case. Feigning romantic interest, she becomes part of the suspect’s world, putting herself on a twisted trail of hitmen, nightclubs, blackmail and false identities that leads to Destination Murder. An assassin who can only do his vile deeds while Moonlight Sonata plays is one of the lapel-grabbing flourishes of this noir programmer from prolific “Killer B” director Edward L. Cahn (Our Gang shorts, It! The Terror from Beyond Space). DVD Release Date: February 22nd, 2011

Bodyguard - Soon after L.A. police detective Mike Carter is bounced from the force, the officer who fired him is found dead. Suspect #1: Mike Carter. While the police dragnet draws tighter, Carter scrambles to clear his name, connecting the dots involving Pasadena bluebloods, the meat-packing industry and cop corruption. As Carter, noir icon Lawrence Tierney (
Dillinger, Reservoir Dogs) brings grim toughness to this atmospheric whodunit that marks the genre debut of another film noir notable, director Richard O. Fleischer (Armored Car Robbery, The Narrow Margin). A filmmaking legend of even greater renown was in the wings. Robert Altman of M*A*S*H, Nashville and Gosford Park receives his first credit (as story co-writer Robert B. Altman). DVD Release Date: January 25th, 2011

All the Right Moves BD - The only way football star Stefan Djordjevic (Tom Cruise) will avoid a life in the blast furnaces of his bleak Pennsylvania hometown is by winning a college scholarship. Even his coach (Craig T. Nelson) dreams of parlaying a winning team into a college job far away from this graveyard of the American Dream. But it's not long before the two virtually ruin each other's chances for escape and their door to the future starts to close. Lea Thompson and Christopher Penn co-star.
Blu-ray Release date: May 3rd, 2011

Such Good Friends - Otto Preminger (Skidoo) directs this comedy-drama based upon the novel by Lois Gould and adapted by Esther Dale (Elaine May under the pseudonym). Julie Messinger (Dyan Cannon) is an intense woman who hides her wild emotions and desires under her conventional façade. Her husband Richard (Laurence Luckinbill) checks into the hospital for a simple mole removal that goes seriously wrong. The stellar cast includes James Coco, Jennifer O’Neill, Ken Howard, Louise Lasser, Nina Foch, Sam Levine, Doris Roberts and Burgess Meredith. DVD Release Date: May 17th, 2011

Sledgehammer - Other than the main title theme, the synth score is largely shapeless but suited to the mood and the videography is frequently striking (with creative angles and some atmospheric lighting during the seance). Not a neglected masterpiece or even definable as "so bad, it's good," SLEDGEHAMMER occupies a strange filmic universe in which it hardly seems to matter that the acting is uneven, the music is droning, and the action choreography is laughable. Watch it when you would normally go to sleep and see if it mimics some of your caffeine-infused nightmares. DVD Release Date: May 10th, 2011

The Terror BD - A cult classic from the master of the B-movie himself, director Roger Corman, available for the first time in thrilling High Definition Blu-Ray! In one of his first-ever roles, a young Jack Nicholson stars as Lt. Andre Duvalier, a soldier in Napoleon s army in 19th century France, separated from his regiment. He awakens on a beach to the sight of a strange woman who leads him to the gothic, towering castle that serves as home to eerie Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff). But, as Duvalier soon discovers, nothing is what it seems in this ghastly, haunted mansion of death!
Blu-ray Release date: April 26th, 2011

Smiles of a Summer Night BD - After fifteen films of mostly local acclaim, the 1956 prize-winning comedy Smiles of a Summer Night at last ushered in an international audience for director Ingmar Bergman. Set in turn-of-the-century Sweden, four women and four men attempt to juggle the laws of attraction amidst their daily bourgeois life. When a weekend in the country brings them all face to face, the women ally to force the men's hands in their matters of the heart, exposing their pretentions and insecurities along the way. Chock full of flirtatious propositions and sharp-witted wisdom delivered by such legends of the Swedish screen as Gunnar Björnstrand, Eva Dahlbeck, Harriet Andersson, and Ulla Jacobsson, Smiles of a Summer Night is one of film history's great tragicomedies, a bittersweet view of the transience of human carnality.
Blu-ray Release Date: May 2nd, 2011

Fat Girl BD - Inspired by the eroticism of an fat teenager and the real life story about a girl saving herself by letting the murder of her family rape her, Catherine Breillat continuing her exploration of female sexuality with “A ma soeur”, aka “Fat Girl”, the perhaps most honest and at the same time provoking coming of age film to date.
Blu-ray Release Date: May 3rd, 2011

The Scent of Green Papaya BD - Taking place in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, the story of “The Scent of Green Papaya” is similar to the simple, yet deeply revealing characteristics of a profound quotation. It starts as a 10-year-old servant-in-training, named Mui, arrives at the family home of her new employers in Saigon. The story is all about her life. The viewers see her experiences and can feel some of her naive, innocent and wholesome view of life through her wide, expressive eyes. In her decade-long term as their dutiful servant, she witnesses the heartbreak of abandonment by the family’s restless father. In addition, she observes and learns from a gentle, grandfatherly neighbour the ability to love from a distance. The audience sees constant juxtapositions of characters that cruelly shun nature while Mui is amused and comforted by their existence. In an extension of placid Asian philosophy, Mui’s quiet observances lead her from her second family home to an evolving one of her own, as she herself enters the 'Circle of Life'.
Blu-ray Release Date: April 26th, 2011

What Dreams May Come BD - Academy Award-winners Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr. embark on a supernatural journey beyond the realm of mortality in this visually stunning and unforgettable epic. After Chris Nielsen (Williams) dies in an accident he tries to remain close to his beautiful mortal wife Annie (Annabella Sciorra). With the friendly spirit (Gooding Jr.) assigned to guide him he begins to adapt to his new state of being in a setting that can only be described as heavenly.
Blu-ray Release date: May 3rd, 2011

The Ron Howard Action Pack - Way back in 1976, actor-director Ron Howard made a bargain with shlockmeister producer-director Roger Corman. It went something like this: Corman agreed to produce Howard's feature directorial debut, the 1977 Grand Theft Auto, and Howard agreed to star in another of Corman's pieces of drive-in fodder, the quirky Eat My Dust! DVD Release Date: May 24th, 2011
