ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I had the 'HD effect', getting more out of a film in 1080P, when I recently viewed Criterion's Blu-ray of Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels. Chantal Akerman's film always carries impact but i was very pleased to see it via Criterion's new package. Kudos to Cult Film in the UK for their Blu-ray transfer of Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D. which has a different look than the older Criterion 1080P, with a new restoration, showing more information in the frame. Now, Yasujiro Ozu's Good Morning not only looks fabulous in Criterion new 4K digital restoration, but is loaded with valuable extras - making it the definitive Blu-ray edition for this masterpiece. We get The Informer newly restored by the BFI National Archive, with a new score - and this impressive British film of the 1920s is now available on Region FREE Blu-ray. Robert Siodmak's brilliant dark cinema masterwork Criss Cross get a region FREE Blu-ray release out of Australia. Love this film noir but as disappointed in the bare-bones status of the Blu-ray. I've had the chance to see some enjoyable martial arts films the past couple of weeks and Masters of Cinema bring us Yuen Woo-ping's Drunken Master to Blu-ray. It's plenty of fun with Jackie Chan at his most impressive. 88 Films bring us the classic Shaw Brothers Five Elements Ninjas to Blu-ray. It's delightfully over-the-top and loaded with action and some uncharacteristic gore. Antonio Margheriti's Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eyes is both imperfect as a film and as a Blu-ray with some unusual darkness creeping into the HD appearance. I've left the last three -which I consider guilty pleasures that I thoroughly appreciated seeing in 1080P; World Without End is an absurd 50's science-fiction evoking the infinitely superior Forbidden Planet. The Warner Archive Blu-ray is certainly recommended at the low Amazon price. I'm in the camp that thoroughly enjoyed the horror The Entity despite its unsavory story of sexual assault, and psychological torture by an unseen demon. I've watched Dragnet, multiple times, where, it seems, that all of Dan Aykroyd's lines, as no-nonsense Los Angeles detective Sgt. Joe Friday have me laughing. His comedic timing make the film and now I have it on Blu-ray. So there. No DVD reviews this week - the article took up much of my time.

"I made a mistake once." - Ole "The Swede" Anderson, The Killers

I'm 'going under the knife' this week - send me healing thoughts!..

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Drunken Master BD - One of the most memorable and imitated master/student relationships in the genre. Yuen Woo Ping's direction is wildly energetic, and his fight choreography -- strongly assisted by Jackie, no doubt -- is nothing less than groundbreaking, shamelessly mixing slapstick from crude to clever, along with traditional martial arts stances and acrobatics. He deftly fills his Cinemascope frame with brilliant movement. Blu-ray Release date: April 24th, 2017

Five Elements Ninjas BD - This is one of the great classic Shaw Brothers kung fu films. The movie contains numerous melee scenes, and all of them are filled with incredible energy. It is a good thing that the actors look to be in great condition. Just watching the fighters skirmish is enough to cause exhaustion in most sedentary viewers. Kung fu warriors kick jump, somersault, tumble, spin, punch, and employ a fantastic variety of weapons. The whole film is wonderfully inventive, surprisingly bloody, and almost unbelievably fun. Blu-ray Release date: November 21st, 2016

World Without End BD - “CinemaScope’s first science-fiction thriller” sees four intrepid astronauts (Hugh Marlowe, Nelson Leigh, Rod Taylor and Christopher Dark) successfully complete mankind’s first Mars mission, only to run afoul of a warp in space. Tossed centuries into the future, they discover an Earth devastated by nuclear war, where mutant beast-men rule the surface. Underground is a society marked by listless males and lustful ladies (future- wear designed by Vargas!). Trapped in a tomorrow they never made, the four astronauts take on the mutant and the malicious while fighting to bring humanity back to the surface. Blu-ray Release date: March 29th, 2017

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels BD - A singular work in film history, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles meticulously details, with a sense of impending doom, the daily routine of a middle-aged widow—whose chores include making the beds, cooking dinner for her son, and turning the occasional trick. In its enormous spareness, Akerman’s film seems simple, but it encompasses an entire world. Whether seen as an exacting character study or one of cinema’s most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time, Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing, compelling movie experiment, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades. Blu-ray Release date: May 9th, 2017

The Informer BD - Based on Liam O'Flaherty's popular novel this gripping thriller is set amongst a group of revolutionaries in the newly independent Ireland of 1922. When one of their number, Francis, kills the chief of police he goes on the run. But when he returns to say goodbye to his mother and former lover he is cruelly betrayed by his one-time friend, Gypo. Newly restored by the BFI National Archive, with a new score from acclaimed violist/composer Garth Knox and premiered at the 2016 BFI London Film Festival, The Informer is one of the finest British films of the 1920s Blu-ray Release date: April 24th, 2017

Good Morning BD - A bright Tokyo suburb buzzing with gossip is the backdrop to Ozu s cheerful comedy, Good Morning. Disillusioned with the seemingly meaningless talk of the adults around them, two brothers take a vow of silence when their parents refuse to buy them a television. With a dexterously woven plot, built on mishaps and misunderstandings, Good Morning pokes fun at the silliness of everyday chatter whilst gently acknowledging its fundamental necessity. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: May 16th, 2017

Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eyes BD - International sensation Jane Birkin (Blow-up) stars as Corringa, a beautiful young girl who returns from a convent school to her family s ancestral castle. But within these walls seethes unspeakable evil, including religious fervor, depraved desires, and sudden, sadistic murder. Now, someone with a taste for terror is slaughtering the castles demented guests. Six have already met their deaths... and for delicious Corringa, the ultimate torment is still to come! Blu-ray Release date: December 26th, 2016

Dragnet BD - No-nonsense Los Angeles detective Sgt. Joe Friday (Dan Aykroyd) is partnered with the wisecracking Pep Streebeck (Tom Hanks), a hip upstart cop, and the mismatched duo is ordered to investigate a strange series of ritual killings. Though Friday and Pep do their share of quarreling, they eventually trace the clues to an ominous cult, and the officers interrupt a violent ceremony. Friday then begins a romance with near-victim Connie Swail (Alexandra Paul), but it could hinder his police work. Blu-ray Release date: June 6th, 2016

Criss Cross BD - Wonderfully seedy tale of betrayal and obsession from superb noir-thriller stylist Siodmak. Beautifully shot (Franz Planer) and scripted (Daniel Fuchs), it bears more than a slight resemblance to the same director's The Killers. Again Lancaster is the fall guy, an armoured-car payroll guard still brooding over his ex-wife (De Carlo), who has taken up with gangster Slim Dundee (Duryea) but leads Lancaster to believe that they can make a new start with booty gained from a daring heist if he will go through with it. As always with Siodmak, the suspense is maintained throughout by taut pacing, visual precision, and excellent characterization. Blu-ray Release date: December 2016

The Entity BD - Academy Award nominee Barbara Hershey stars as Carla Moran, a hard-working single mother who, one terrible night is raped in her bedroom by someone or something that she cannot see. Met with sceptical psychiatrists, she is repeatedly attacked in her car, in the bath, and in front of her children. Could this be a case of hysteria, a manifestation of childhood sexual trauma, or something even more horrific? Now, with a group of daring parapsychologists, Carla will attempt an unthinkable experiment: to seduce, trap and ultimately capture the depraved spectral fury that is The Entity. Eureka Blu-ray Release date: May 15th, 2017

Umberto D. BD - This neorealist masterpiece by Vittorio De Sica follows an elderly pensioner as he strives to make ends meet during Italy’s postwar economic recovery. Alone except for his dog, Flike, Umberto struggles to maintain his dignity in a city where human kindness seems to have been swallowed up by the forces of modernization. His simple quest to satisfy his basic needs—food, shelter, companionship—makes for one of the most heartbreaking stories ever filmed, and an essential classic of world cinema.
