ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I really enjoyed Silvio Amadio's Amuck on 88 Films Blu-ray. This superior Giallo with stunning Barbara Bouchet is recommended! It was hard to deny Elio Petri's Property is No Longer a Theft, on Arrow Blu-ray, its deserved place in top spot. There are also two strong Shaw Brothers films this week - Killer Constable - now on Blu-ray - is one of the best Wushu efforts - as is The 5 Deadly Venoms on Blu-ray from Weinstein (Dragon Dynasty) Fans should strongly consider. 1996's The Crucible, from a play by the great Arthur Miller, has Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder and Joan Allen has 17th-century Salem Witch trials, emotional dram and tension. It's being released on Blu-ray from Kino. 1957's The Vampire bends the vampire-legend in a modern take with Noir-gal favorite Coleen Gray. It gets a Shout! Factory Blu-ray release. There are things to appreciate about the heavily dramatic The Daughter I liked the Indie effort Pig Pen and am pleased it is available on Blu-ray. Aenigma has some Fulci-style appeal but is not upper tier, yet the best way to see it is on 88 Films Blu-ray. No DVDs reviews this week...

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Crucible BD - When Arthur Miller's play The Crucible was first staged in 1953, it was widely acclaimed as a metaphor for the recklessness of Joseph McCarthy and his spurious crusade against communism. In its 1996 screen adaptation (scripted by Miller), the tone has been adjusted somewhat and plays as a warning against the dangers of political and religious extremism of all kinds. After a group of young women is accused of witchcraft in the Puritan community of Salem, Mass. in 1692, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder) is held in suspicion of practicing magic. Abigail in turn levels charges against John Proctor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his wife Elizabeth (Joan Allen). Blu-ray Release date: April 11th, 2017

Pig Pen BD - Only 13 of age, Zack (Lucas Koch) is still rather young ... but his life is hell already, especially after Wayne (Vito Trigo) has moved in with his welfare dependent mum (Nicolette le Faye), a bully if there ever was one who knows how to play her addictions to keep her with him despite the fact that he tends to abuse her and make her into his prostitute, in Zack's full sight. Eventually, Wayne throws Zack out of the house, telling him he has to come home with 50 bucks, otherwise nothing doing, but gives him the "good" advice to just sell his body. Now this is something Zack just can't do, so he tries to fend for himself, but only with limited success - and then a compassionate motorist picks up the boy, and Zack convinces him to drive him and his mum out of town - but when he sneaks into their home to fetch mum, he finds Wayne has turned it into hell in the meantime ... but what's way worse, Wayne's still in, and he's been waiting for Zack... Blu-ray Release date: February 14th, 2017

Killer Constable BD - During the Ching Dynasty period, 20,000 taels of gold are stolen from the Palace vaults. The Empress Dowager orders her chief security guard Liu Ching Tien to capture the thieves and have the gold returned within three months. Leng Tien Ying (Chen Kuan-tai), the Court Chief Constable, is given this difficult assignment. One robber is caught, and provides clues about his accomplices. Meanwhile, the robber-chief, Feng Feng Jia (Ku Feng), sends his own top killer after Leng but without success. Feng's men make several more attempts against Leng's life, but only succeed in wounding him. Leng finally confronts the robber-chief in a fight, and Feng, at the point of death, reveals the truth about the real masterbrain behind the theft. Leng sets out once more, to achieve justice and complete his mission. Blu-ray Release date: March 27th, 2017

Property is No Longer a Theft BD - A young bank clerk (Flavio Bucci, the blind pianist in Dario Argento's Suspiria), denied a loan by his employer, decides to exact his revenge the local butcher (Ugo Tognazzi, La Grande bouffe) who is not only a nasty, violent, greedy piece of work but also one of the bank's star customers. Quitting his job, the clerk devotes all of his time tormenting the butcher, stealing his possessions one-by-one, including his mistress (Daria Nicolodi, Deep Red). Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2017

The Vampire BD - One of the strongest assets of The Vampire is its atmospheric score by composer Gerald Fried, a specialist in yielding maximum production value with very little money. This was not only his first horror film but also his first with the Fielder/Landres team, with whom he would also work on their two subsequent features. More relevant to film buffs, however, is Fried's status as Stanley Kubrick's composer of choice since their debut film, Fear and Desire (1953)... Blu-ray Release date: April 11th, 2017

The Daughter BD - After a fifteen-year absence, Christian (Paul Schneider) returns home to rural New South Wales for the marriage of his father, Henry (Geoffrey Rush), the wealthy owner of the local mill that's been the economic bedrock of the community for generations. Christian gets reacquainted with his old friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie) and finds himself drawn to Oliver's family, which includes wife Charlotte (Miranda Otto), daughter Hedvig (Odessa Young), and father-in-law Walter (Sam Neill). Unexpectedly, Christian discovers a secret that could tear Oliver s family apart; and when Henry announces the imminent closure of the mill, it sends a quake through the community. As Christian tries to right the wrongs of the past, his actions threaten to shatter the lives of those he left behind years before. Blu-ray Release date: April 25th, 2017

The 5 Deadly Venoms BD - The master of the Poison Clan (Dick Wei) is dying and his last wish is that his final student, Yang De (Chiang Sheng), go out and accomplish two tasks. He must find Clan member Yuan (Ku Feng) and warn him that the master’s former students may threaten the treasure of the Clan. Then try to find the five students and see if they are using their martial arts for evil. Yang must help them atone for the Clan's heinous deeds if they are good, but if they are evil, he must find a way to destroy them. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011

Aenigma BD - When a group of popular kids at St. Mary's College play a cruel prank on the unattractive school weirdo, Kathy, they leave the poor girl in a permanent coma. When beautiful new girl Eva (Lara Lamberti, A Blade in the Dark) arrives at the school she's given Kathy s old room and it isn t long before strange occurrences are afoot and bodies are piling up. Kathy has possessed Eva and is using her as a pawn in her quest for bloody revenge. From the Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci (Zombi 3), comes this gross-out classic that features some of the maestro s most memorable late-career set-pieces; including a grotesque death by snails scene that, once seen, can never be unseen. Blu-ray Release date: March 13th, 2017

Amuck BD - Winsome young Greta (Bouchet) takes a job as a secretary to novelist Richard Stuart (Granger), who lives on a secluded island off the Italian coast near Venice.
But the job is just a front. Greta's really there to investigate the disappearance of her friend Sally, another blond beauty who worked for Stuart previously, and has now gone missing. However, uncovering the truth will be more difficult than Greta could have imagined. First, she'll have to get by Richard's wife Eleanora (Neri), a wily thing who seems intent on engaging everyone in bizarre sex games. Blu-ray Release date: February 27th, 2017
