ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): First choice seems fairly obvious to me - one of the most desirable works of modern cinema, Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day actually comes to Criterion Blu-ray. Cinephiles should be delirious at owning this package. Our highest recommendation. I also found a lot of value and enjoyment out of CineliciousPics Blu-rays of two Agnčs Varda films with yummy Jane Birkin; Jane B. Par Agnčs V. / Kung-Fu Master! Let's bring out all three of the Japanese IVC, region FREE, Blu-rays of note; Jacques Tourneur's, studio-dictated title, I Walked With a Zombie has masterful appeal and the 1080P and lossless audio advancement is apparent encouraging the director's deep fan base to snap it up. Less so can be said of Tourneur's Cat People in its first Blu-ray upgrade which doesn't carry the same consistency but the film's stacked, rich, visuals entice. Alfred Hitchcock's occasionally forgotten Suspicion with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine also get a new Blu-ray treatment and will have the most attraction to those appreciative of grain textures. Those with infinite patience may se Warner release these three one day... we hope. BFI bring us Kaige Chen's Farewell My Concubine (the only Chinese language film to ever win the Cannes Palme d'Or) on the Blu-ray format. It is both a desirable and impressive HD presentation. Despite my reservation on the transfer authoring I was very moved by Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique as viewed on Blu-ray. Criterion bring Les Blank's free-form bio-doc on Leon Russell, A Poem is a Naked Person to an embraceable Blu-ray package that fans of either will never regret buying. Arrow continue the Pam Grier love-in with another of the star's grindhouse niche gems, Black Mama White Mama goes Blu-ray and the package is predictably loaded with interesting supplements. The film's sequences include women unfairly treated in a foreign prison, voyeuristic shower scenes, lesbian sex, and our two protagonists wearing Nun habits as a means of escape - Nu'ff said. I saw a lot positives in Delmar Daves' Cowboy on Blu-ray from Twilight Time - a coming of age western adventure that encompasses a good story, fine performances and an adept filmmaker. On DVD this week, I reviewed 4 titles; I thoroughly James Caan's only directorial effort Hide in Plain Sight - a different take on the star's usual crime-thrillers. I was also very keen on Night Watch - a sneaky Brit-based horror from the 70s with a surprisingly strong Elizabeth Taylor. Lastly, I'm always a big fan of the creature-feature-esque 50's flics and re-watched new DVDs of, the self-explanatorily titled, Monster on the Campus and a story with inventive attacking rocks in The Monolith Monsters.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Black Mama White Mama BD - Lee (Grier), a tough prostitute and Karen (Markov), a revolutionary, are admitted to a tough women s prison where almost immediately (after some playful showering that prefigures Porky s) they clash. Packed off to a maximum security prison, their transport is ambushed by Karen s guerrilla friends and the two escape into the Filipino jungle. Chained together and with differing escape plans their clash intensifies as Lee wants to retrieve a stash of stolen cash to get her off the island and Karen wants to re-join her revolutionary group. Escape isn't easy as they come up against a series of obstacles including a corrupt cop, a bounty hunter, a sadistic Drug Lord and guerrillas who threaten to turn everything upside down. Blu-ray Release dates: March 22nd (US) April 4th (UK), 2016

Polytechnique BD - Based on the true events that occurred on December 6, 1989, at the Montreal’s Polytechnique School, the movie tells us about that specific day through the eyes of two students, Valérie and Jean-François, whose lives have been changed forever, when a young man entered the school with one idea in mind: kill himself and take with him as many women as possible. Blu-ray Release date: June 10th, 2014

A Brighter Summer Day BD - Among the most praised and sought-after titles in all contemporary film, this singular masterpiece of Taiwanese cinema, directed by Edward Yang, finally comes to home video in the United States. Set in the early sixties in Taiwan, A Brighter Summer Day is based on the true story of a crime that rocked the nation. A film of both sprawling scope and tender intimacy, this novelistic, patiently observed epic centers on the gradual, inexorable fall of a young teenager (Chen Chang, in his first role) from innocence to juvenile delinquency, and is set against a simmering backdrop of restless youth, rock and roll, and political turmoil. Blu-ray Release date: March 22nd, 2016

Cowboy BD - Likeable attempt to show what life was really like in the old West (ironically based on reminiscences by the notoriously mendacious Frank Harris), with Lemmon as the hotel clerk who joins a 2,000 mile cattle drive from Chicago to the Rio Grande in the 1870s. The episodic narrative, taking in an Indian attack, a Mexican fiesta and a cattle stampede, is more romantic than realistic; but it remains consistently atmospheric and enjoyable, with the striking use of landscape characteristic of Daves. Blu-ray Release date: February, 2016

Suspicion BD - Johnnie Aysgarth (Cary Grant) is a seemingly rich, care-free playboy. He conveniently meets and marries Lina McLaidlaw Aysgarth, a soon-to-be heiress. Charmed by Johnnie's initially, her suspicions about him grow and grow. Firstly his lack of income is revealed. And why does he have such a keen interest in poisons? Blu-ray release date: February 26th, 2016

I Walked With a Zombie BD - "I Walked With A Zombie" is a deceptively adept film by often unrecognized master director Jacques Tourneur. The plot: A young Canadian nurse named Betsy (Frances Dee) comes to Haiti to care for Jessica (Christine Gordon), the wife of sugar plantation manager Paul Holland (James Ellison). Jessica, seemingly always in a nightgown, is in a purposeless stupor which the surrounding chanting and Voodoo respectful natives term "zombie". Betsy is determined to prove to Paul her medicinal value and stops at virtually nothing, including attending a voodoo ceremony with her charge, to help cure Jessica of her unusual mind-erasure state. The exposure of Jessica to the natives only damages the situation as the superstitious locals now view her as on the 'living dead' and she must be further exorcized. Blu-ray release date: February 26th, 2016

Cat People (1942) BD - Tourneur's 1942 Cat People is one of those rare films that has an indefinable appeal - it unwittingly achieved cultish status while leaving a very long-lasting impression on those who see it. It expressed its unusual plot with such a degree of garish suspense while at the same time underachieving the lurid posters that drew its crowds to the theatre. With a low budget and virtually no special effects it is still quite haunting even by modern standards. There is a slight inference of feline/feminine disdain and outright fear of women, but its is a bit of a stretch. The feminine mystique of the film is till very prevalent though and perhaps this is its appeal. With a macguffin-like horror that is never disclosed and it has under-discussed origins. Blu-ray release date: February 26th, 2016

Jane B. Par Agnčs V. / Kung-Fu Master! BD - In each, Jane inhabits a new character, playing a cat & mouse game with Varda as they explore the role of the Muse and the Artist, all the while showcasing the multifaceted nature of Birkin’s talent. A lovely, bittersweet companion to JANE B. PAR AGNČS V. from director Agnes Varda and star/muse Jane Birkin, KUNG-FU MASTER has nothing to do with martial arts – the film’s title comes from an arcade video game played obsessively in the film by a teenaged boy, Julien. Birkin delivers one of her finest performances as a lonely 40-year old woman who finds herself shattering taboos by falling in love with the 14-year old Julien – but is it romance, or a desperate attempt to turn back time in the face of middle age? Blu-ray Release date: March 8th, 2016

Farewell My Concubine BD - An adaptation of the novel by Lilian Lee, the film explores the effect of China's political turmoil during the mid-20th century on the lives of individuals, families and groups. Spanning 53 years, the film is two films at once, a tale of the friendship of two men against the historical backdrop of a country in upheaval. The central characters, Dieyi and Xiaolou, are two apprentices in the Peking Opera, the film examines how their lives are affected by major political changes such as the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930s and the victory of the communists in 1949 - alongside the story of a woman who comes between them. Blu-ray Release date: March 21st, 2016

A Poem is a Naked Person BD - Les Blank considered this free-form feature documentary about beloved singer-songwriter Leon Russell, filmed between 1972 and 1974, to be one of his greatest accomplishments. Yet it has not been released until now. Hired by Russell to film him at his recording studio in northeast Oklahoma, Blank ended up constructing a unique, intimate portrait of a musician and his environment. Made up of mesmerizing scenes of Russell and his band performing, both in concert and in the studio, as well as off-the-cuff moments behind the scenes, this singular film—which also features performances by Willie Nelson and George Jones—has attained legendary status over the years. Blu-ray Release date: March 29th, 2016

Night Watch - Night Watch a suspenseful, under-rated thriller tells the story of a lonely, unhappily married woman who believes that she sees a murder committed in the deserted house across her courtyard. Ellen Wheeler (Elizabeth Taylor) spends her nights alone, drinking, wandering around her living room, and looking out the window. One night she witnesses a murder. She calls the police, who investigate, but find nothing. Her husband John (Laurence Harvey) believes that she has imagined the entire thing, but her friend Sarah (Billie Whitelaw), while skeptical, is sympathetic to her deeply troubled friend. DVD Release Date: October 25th, 2011

The Monolith Monsters - The original 'rocky horror': a Jack Arnold-originated, quite effective Universal sci-fi paranoia yarn featuring the alien-induced metamorphosis of men to stone, and a subsequent stampede of towering crystal structures across small-town America. Grant Williams (The Incredible Shrinking Man) is again dwarfed by his adversaries, though he plays the only possible hero: a geologist. Screenbound DVD Release Date: February 15th, 2016

Hide in Plain Sight - Factory worker Thomas Hacklin has moved on with life after divorce. He plays baseball on weekends, dates a little, and never misses a scheduled visit with his two young children. But one day Hacklin shows up for a visit and finds his children are gone. They, Hacklin's ex and the mob-informant she married have been whisked into the secrecy of the witness relocation program. James Caan directs and stars in a compelling true-life tale of a father determined to find and reclaim his children, defying federal agents and anyone else standing in his way. Get caught up in "an unusually satisfying, almost perfectly scaled little melodrama about so-called ordinary people trapped in extraordinary events. DVD Release Date: July 23rd, 2010

Monster on the Campus - In this sci-fi film, a college professor must deal with the cataclysmic consequences that ensue when a transmogrifying dragonfly bites a prehistoric fish from Madagascar. Soon after the bite, the strange fish becomes gigantic and begins passing on its new ability to morph all it comes in contact with back into their primal forms. When it bites a dog, the dog becomes a wolf. When some fish slime ends up in the professor's pipe, the professor put it to his lips, and he turns into a rampaging Neanderthal with a very large stone-axe that he freely wields around the terrified college campus. Bloody mayhem ensues. Screenbound DVD Release Date: February 15th, 2016
