ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It was such a strong week that I don't know if I can isolate one Blu-ray package. Masters of Cinema's A Touch of Zen Blu-ray has so much value that it's hard not to put it at number one, but it looks like it may already be out-of-print on the day of its release! I was overjoyed with Kino's new Blu-ray transfer of Jean Renoir's The Southerner - what a film and what a revelation beside the old DVD. I can always appreciated a different transfer with another Blu-ray already available - Kino Lorber's new Blu-ray of Eric Rohmer's Pauline at the Beach does just that - widescreen, progressive, English-friendly extras. I'm sold. You know its a stacked week when a Criterion Blu-ray isn't mentioned till fourth. Nagisa Oshima's Death By Hanging is funny, provocative and well worth indulging in. Arrow's Blu-ray of Nikkatsu Diamond Guys Vol. 1 offers three stylish genre flics from the studio's hay-day. Incredible value. We were late to the party with Koch's stellar Destry Rides Again Blu-ray (I think Leonard told me about this Jimmy Stewart / Marlene Dietrich western in 1080P 1 1/2 years ago!) but he was right - it offers a magnificent image - especially when compared to SD. Within the week, we actually covered two separate Blu-rays of Pasquale Festa Campanile's, edgy, machismo and exploitive, Hitch-Hike - 88 Films out of the UK and Raro in the US (but region FREE). Always good to have choices and the film is one that has definite replay value. Hal Ashby's The Last Detail is a memorable and brilliant film experience and Twilight Time have brought it to Blu-ray. Gary Sinise's Of Mice and Men is a wonderfully realized film and now available on Blu-ray from Olive with many supplements. Humphrey Bogart and 1/2 the cast of Casablanca star in Passage to Marseille - and the new Warner Archive Blu-ray is stellar. Artificial Eye bring us Hector Babenco's evocative Kiss of the Spider Woman to Blu-ray - an unforgettable film. Eric Cotenas covered Thundercrack! - a highly acclaimed Blu-ray production reaching the top of many lists last year. I had a modest chuckle at the retro-exploitation of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death with favorite Adrienne Barbeau - now reaching Blu-ray status along with Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals - more sex than cannibals in this shabby attempt at mixing exploitation genres. Quote for today: “The moment we cry in a film is not when things are sad but when they turn out to be more beautiful than we expected them to be..” - Alain de Botton      Have an enriching week! - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Hitch-Hike BD - Tight, tense Italian thriller that contains all you'd hope for in 1970s Euro-exploitica, and a great deal more besides. Italian director Campanile was responsible for dozens of cheap but innovative exploitica treats, but this psycho-thriller is among his best. Built around a brutal performance by David Hess (Last House On The Left), it's a lurid mix of sex 'n violence, but Campanile also pays close attention to atmosphere, and keeps the tension at boiling point throughout. Raro Blu-ray Release date: February 16th, 2016

Pauline at the Beach BD - Young and beautiful Pauline (Amanda Langlet) is spending the end of the summer with her older and sexually alluring cousin Marion (Arielle Dombasle) on the stunning Atlantic coast of France. And it isn't long before three eligible men attempt to entice them both into romance. But head games, deceit and lies soon interfere with the amorous mood, threatening to spoil this idyllic playground...and Pauline s innocent views of love. Blu-ray Release Date: February 23rd, 2016

The Southerner BD - Visually influenced by the documentary work of Pare Lorentz and Robert Flaherty, and assisted in the dialogue-writing by William Faulkner, Paris-born Renoir crafted a portrait of rural life that is honest, unsentimental, and filled with the emotional subtleties for which the director is best remembered. The Southerner earned three Academy Award nominations (Best Director, Original Music Score, and Sound). Blu-ray Release Date: February 8th, 2016

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals BD - Joe DAmato may have hit video nasty pay-dirt with his classic monster-mash ANTHROPOPHAGUS but it was with EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS that the late great splatter genius made his most mesmerising flesh n fear masterpiece. Spinning a similar story to the later genre trendsetter CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, DAmato begins his horror-shocker in Manhattan, wherein an undercover journalist (essayed by the legendary sex symbol Laura Gemser) comes across some found footage of native practices. Further indicating its influence on the movies that followed, DAmato sends his raven-haired reporter all the way to South America although even she cannot be prepared for the native nastiness that is about entrap her in the Amazon jungle! Blu-ray Release date: January 25th, 2016

Destry Rides Again BD - Marvellous comedy Western, with Stewart's pacifist, reputedly wimpy marshal taming the lawless town of Bottleneck by means of words and jokes rather than the gun Donlevy's villain repeatedly provokes him to use. What is remarkable about the film is the way it combines humour, romance, suspense and action so seamlessly (with individual scenes - Dietrich singing 'See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have', Stewart's delicious parable about a homicidal orphan, Mischa Auer losing his pants - indelibly printed in the memory). Flawless performances, pacy direction and a snappy script place it head and shoulders above virtually any other spoof oater. Blu-ray Release Date: March 20th, 2014

Of Mice and Men BD - Sinise the director manages to keep the various elements under control as if he already has a dozen films under his belt. In fact, this is only his second (after "Miles From Home"). The screenplay, by Horton Foote, is masterful and the technical elements are all excellent, from the period sets and costumes to the sharp cinematography. Blu-ray Release Date: January 19th, 2016

Kiss of the Spider Woman BD - Two cell mates in a South American prison are wildly different men. Luis is a trans individual who is found guilty of immoral behavior and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. However, during the time they spend together, the two men come to understand and respect one another more than they ever knew they could. Blu-ray Release date: January 25th, 2016

The Last Detail BD - The Last Detail is so perfectly tailored to the star that it could've been mapped out from a Pythagorean theorem. U.S. Navy petty officers Billy “Badass” Buddusky (Nicholson) and Richard “Mule” Mulhall (Otis Young) are assigned a shore-patrol detail in which they're to escort sailor Larry Meadows (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk, Virginia to a naval prison near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It's apparent that Buddusky and Mulhall have long ago lost whatever zeal or optimism they may have felt toward their profession, and they clearly see this assignment as a way to screw around for a few days. The plan is simple: With a week to accomplish a task that should reasonably take two days, Buddusky and Mulhall will bust ass getting Meadows to jail so they can take their time drinking and eating through their per diems on the way back. Blu-ray Release date: January, 2016

Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death BD - These women are serious about their TASTE in men. To avoid a serious avocado shortage, the U.S. government hires feminist anthropology professor Margo Hunt (Shannon Tweed) to find the man-eating Piranha Women tribe who inhabit the avocado jungle of Southern California. Assisted by chauvinist Jim (Bill Maher) and a dimwitted student named Bunny, Hunt must convince the tribe to move to Malibu condos while simultaneously fending off her rival Dr. Kurtz (Adrienne Barbeau). Meanwhile, Bunny's contemplating joining the Piranha gals...but she must consume Jim first. Blu-ray Release Date: February 8th, 2016

A Touch of Zen BD - An unambitious painter named Gu (Shih Jun) lives with his mother in the vicinity of an abandoned mansion rumoured to be haunted. In actuality, the mansion has become a hiding place for the warrior Yang (Hsu Feng) and her own mother, both taking refuge following the assassination of their loyal minister father by the wicked eunuch Wei of East Chamber. After the eunuch sends an army to pursue the escapees, the group fortify the mansion with traps and false intimations of the terrifying ghosts within. But even after, things take yet more unsettling turns... Blu-ray Release date: January 25th, 2016

Thundercrack! BD - Witness if you dare... the world's only underground kinky art horror film. With the initial setup of an atmospheric gothic tale a dark and stormy night breakdown featuring a creepy old house on the hill it quickly turns eerie and different. A tour de force of underground filmmaking with a plot beyond description, this film fully exposes itself with amazing dialogue and trash-noir lighting through which to peer at the pickles, the puke and the polymorphs. Blu-ray Release date: December 8th, 2015

Passage to Marseille BD - Humphrey Bogart reunites with director Michael Curtiz and other key Casablanca personnel (including costars Claude Rains, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet) for a tension-swept Passage to Marseille. Bogart plays Jean Matrac, a World War II French patriot who escapes Devil’s Island, survives a dangerous freighter voyage and becomes a gunner in the Free French Air Corps. Passage sailed into theaters on stormy seas. Controversy surrounded the scene in which Matrac machine-guns the helpless survivors of a downed plane that attacked the freighter. That a soldier of freedom would act ignobly brought protests from religious and censorship groups. But, like Matrac facing a strafing dive-bomber, the studio held its ground. War could even dehumanize a hero. Blu-ray Release date: November 10, 2015

Death By Hanging BD - Genius provocateur Nagisa Oshima, an influential figure in the Japanese New Wave of the 1960s, made one of his most startling political statements with the compelling pitch-black satire Death by Hanging. In this macabre farce, a Korean man is sentenced to death in Japan but survives his execution, sending the authorities into a panic about what to do next. At once disturbing and oddly amusing, Oshima’s constantly surprising film is a subversive and surreal indictment of both capital punishment and the treatment of Korean immigrants in his country. Blu-ray Release date: February 16th, 2016

Nikkatsu Diamond Guys Vol. 1 BD - Nikkatsu, the oldest film studio in Japan, inaugurated a star system in the late 1950s, finding talent and contracting to their Diamond Line for a series of wild genre pictures. This collection celebrates these Diamond Guys with three classic films from directors Seijun Suzuki (Voice Without a Shadow), Toshio Masuda (Red Pier) and Buichi Saito (The Rambling Guitarist). Blu-ray Release date: January 25-26th, 2016
