ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was just enthralled with Sam Fuller's The Naked Kiss on Criterion Blu-ray this past week and it seems my number 1 pick. Next up we have two 'epics' - very long films that are readily described as masterpieces - both Costner's extended cut of Dances With Wolves with its breathtaking outdoor cinematography and Leone's brilliant Once Upon a Time in America together give almost 8-hours of home theater awe in 1080P glory. Yasujiro Ozu draws me in each time and it's a pleasure to own There Was a Father and his first colour film, Equinox Flower in the Blu-ray format. I used to find Fuller's Shock Corridor arduous but in hi-def it was a true pleasure to rewatch. While Corman's The Wasp Woman is perfect Tooze fodder - the Synergy package is not worth the exorbitant price. Bert I. Gordon monsters are always tacky but they may have reached their zenith with The Cyclops from the Warner Archive (now with the missing ten seconds included!). Lastly Eric covers Outcast - a new highly rated horror from directed Colm McCarthy - released next week..

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS
 

The Cyclops - Lovely Susan Winter organizes an expedition deep into the wilds of Mexico. She hopes to find her aviator fiancé, lost after his plane crashed. Instead she and her three male companions find behemoth bugs, giant battling lizards, mountains practically glowing with uranium, and a 25-foot-tall human beast with a single eye, a melted-cheese-sandwich face and a very scary attitude. If you like nifty ’50s horror, The Cyclops is the kind of over-the-top frightfest that’ll have you spilling your popcorn. Among the cast: Lon Chaney (The Wolf Man) as a manipulative wheeler-dealer who’d just love to become a uranium millionaire…no matter the danger to the rest of the expedition. Writer/director Bert I. Gordon (Beginning of the End, The Amazing Colossal Man) masterminds the menace. DVD Release Date: October 12th, 2010

Shock Corridor BD - In Shock Corridor, the great American writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller masterfully charts the uneasy terrain between sanity and madness. Seeking a Pulitzer Prize, reporter Johnny Barrett (Peter Breck) has himself committed to a mental hospital to investigate a murder. As he closes in on the killer, insanity closes in on him. Constance Towers costars as Johnny’s coolheaded stripper girlfriend. With its startling commentary on racism and other hot-button issues in sixties America and its daring photography by Stanley Cortez, Shock Corridor has had far-reaching influence. Blu-ray Release Date: January 18th, 2011

The Naked Kiss BD - The setup is pure pulp: A former prostitute (a crackerjack Constance Towers) relocates to a buttoned-down suburb, determined to fit in with mainstream society. But in the strange, hallucinatory territory of writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller (Shock Corridor, The Big Red One), perverse secrets inevitably simmer beneath a seemingly wholesome surface. Featuring radical visual touches, full-throttle performances, brilliant cinematography by Stanley Cortez (The Night of the Hunter), and one bizarrely beautiful musical number, The Naked Kiss is among Fuller’s greatest, boldest entertainments. Blu-ray Release Date: January 18th, 2011

Dances With Wolves BD - His name, "Dances With Wolves," is the fulfillment of his character, the character he exposed in the opening scenes. He does what all medicine people do--he builds relationships between this world and other worlds--worlds of the spirit, of animals, of dreams, of strangers, and of new human values. As the film ends, he will try to bridge these worlds, and he begins the return journey to "talk with those who would listen." Screenwriter Michael Blake and Kevin Costner bridge two worlds themselves, and they do it without a word about shamanism or the psychology of mystical experience. I suspect, however, that they knew just what they were doing. Blu-ray Release Date: January 11th, 2011

The Wasp Woman - A film that highlights Corman's ability to ring interesting changes on proven formulas. The she-creature and the havoc she wreaks are both predictable enough, but it's a novel touch that she's a beautician, and that her metamorphosis is caused by experiments with new cosmetics ingredients. Susan Cabot (always Corman's favourite female sadist-figure) anchors the sexual mayhem in a very credible characterisation. DVD Release Date: December 7th, 2010

Once Upon a Time in America BD - The movie follows the rise and fall of a band of Jewish gangsters from New York’s Lower East Side. The two older members of the gang, Noodles and Max, have a complex relationship as both best friends and rivals. The story takes place over five decades and unfolds nonlinearly though the use of jump cuts., flashback sequences and just enough unsolved mystery to suggest that much of it may be an opium dream. As much an operatic tale of lost love, betrayal and longing as a crime caper there is something about the way Leone put this one together that supersedes the limitations of the genre. One of Sergio Leone's best and a true masterpiece of cinema. Blu-ray Release Date: January 11th, 2011

There Was a Father BD - Paternal authority is unquestionably ascendant in Ozu s powerful war-time drama There Was a Father which is included here. Shuhei Horikawa (Chishu Ryu) sacrifices his teaching career after an unfortunate accident but refuses to sacrifice the education of his only son. Blu-ray Release Date: January 17th, 2011

Equinox Flower BD - Yasujiro Ozu s first colour film, Equinox Flower is a deft comedy that takes an ironic glance at the decline of paternal authority. Shin Saburi plays Wataru Hirayama, an old-fashioned father whose outwardly liberal views on marriage are severely tested when his daughter tells him she wants a love-match. Outwitted and outflanked by his wily female relatives Hirayama stubbornly refuses to admit defeat. The director s playful use of colour, poetry and arch humour combine to make this tale of old versus new at once deeply moving and razor-sharp. Blu-ray Release Date: January 17th, 2011

Outcast - Outcast situates its supernatural world in the urban and suburban gloom of anonymous flats, trailer parks, and the grungy back alleys (some scenes take place in an impressively gothic Edinburgh). The pacing is a little uneven; the action moves at a good pace at the expense of the "tragic" love story (although some other unexpected diversions are thrown in). The teenage characters actually look the part, Nesbitt is effortlessly sinister, and Dickie is good at restrained rage. The distinctive look of the film's cinematography quickly becomes monotonous (although there are some nice, warm-toned close-ups of the actors), but the shakey-cam effects is used here with restraint. DVD Release Date: January 17th, 2011
