(aka 'Hijosen no onna' or 'Dragnet Girl')
This silent gangster picture by Yasujiro Ozu (1933), about a typist determined to make her criminal boyfriend go straight, is one of the most striking of Ozu's American-style silents. It stars the great Kinuyo Tanaka, who later played the title role in Mizoguchi's The Life of Oharu and subsequently became a director herself (the first Japanese woman to do so). UPDATE: ADDED - Criterion/Eclipse - Region 1 - NTSC - April 2015: The progressive Criterion SD image is superior to the old Panaorama - notably in the contrast supporting brighter whites and richer, darker black levels, although may show a shade less information in the frame. It has damage but it seems less-noticeable on the Eclipse series 42: Silent Ozu - Three Crime Dramas edition - we have reviewed that entire set HERE. *** ON THE PANORAMA: Typical of the other Panorama Ozu's DVDs - it shares the same weaknesses (interlaced, damage marks, précised subtitle translations, weak audio etc.), but the big bonus, again, is at least being able to see the film at all.... and the price makes it pretty irresistible. Damage is not overly-intrusive and I was actually surprised at how well the image looked in many sequences. A highly interesting Ozu silent with a lot of American influence - certainly worth seeing for more than the Ozu completists. I enjoyed it very much! |
