(aka "Devil in the Flesh" or "Diable au corps, Le")

directed by Marco Bellocchio
France / Italy  1986

One of the most controversial Italians films of the 80s, DEVIL IN THE FLESH takes Raymond Radiguets classic novel and updates it to modern times. Dealing with the legacy of Italy's "leaden years" and the aftermath of the social struggles headed by the extreme left wing revolutionary groups, DEVIL IN THE FLESH caused a critical uproar upon its release due to its highly-charged political and frank subject matter. Marushka Detmers (THE MAMBO KINGS) stars as Giulia, a young woman engaged to marry Giacomo, her fiancée who's sitting behind bars because of his political activity. Restless in her appetites and inner turmoil, she meets a young student named Andrea and a passionate affair quickly ensues. But when the day arrives in which she has to face whether she wants to share her life with Giacomo or not, Giulia takes a surprising decision….

Comments Although the bitrates are done my two different systems - we can see this appears to be the exact same transfer. Actually, I had heard that the guys from MYA were the same ones from the, now defunct, No Shame label. The new edition has less sharing the disc and this may have resulted in a slightly superior compression. The caps look like there may be more artifacts in the NO SHAME release - but as this particular comparison was not done with the same system (software) I can't be positive. Essentially it looks almost the exact same to me.

Unfortunately, the new edition (MYA) is more expensive than the original NO SHAME DVD - which was ($19.99) - and doesn't have the extras - the booklet, interview and hour's worth of features (offering only the trailer and stills gallery). Both disc are region FREE , progressive, anamorphic and have optional English subtitles to go with the 2.0 channel Italian - but this is an easy decision - get the NO SHAME if you still can but the film is certainly very interesting and worth seeing at any rate!

Image: A high definition tape re-mastered from original film elements was used here, and the DVD looks just fabulous. The picture has depth and the black has good definition. In my opinion the contrast are a little drastic and I wonder if the colors are intended to be as saturated as they are. But this is a minor fault (if any), and No Shame comes with a Criterion standard DVD.

The sound is taken from an optical source, and although it's a strong mono mix, there's occasionally dirt and scratches on it (popping).
