Wartime melodrama with William Wyler's deft directorial touch of realism interspersed with sympathetic and lovable characters. Winner of multiple awards this film may feel quite dated to modern viewers, but regardless, it is a very worthwhile viewing experience with everlasting themes of respect, community and familial bonding. Characters are shown with subtle flaws enhancing their realism and the story is one of consequence and drama probably touching on memories of many individuals who lived through similar tribulations of World War II. Being aware of the period this film was made it showed a prevalent 'shot-in-the-arm' feel for the Allies and although, not treating the topic politically even-handedly, it did not overindulge to allow generalizations. I say immerse yourself in the cinematic power of William Wyler and sip from the fountain of a divisive moment in humanity that we can hope has vanished forever. out of . |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were ripped directly from the Blu-ray disc.
ADDITION: Warner - Region FREE - Blu-ray (January 2013): What a great flic - Warner's HD-upgrade improves in the predictable areas with a smoother, artifact-free presentation. It is brighter and there is a hint of grain-texture. Contrast levels of the 2004 Warner DVD were quite adept and there isn't a dramatic superiority on the new 1080P transfer. In fact, I like the SD except the visuals could appear slightly dirty by comparison. The older DVD may be slightly vertically stretched beside both the Taiwanese digital attempt and the BD. Those with more discerning systems will notice the video benefits of the Blu-ray more. I thoroughly enjoyed my presentation.
Audio is lossless with some foreign language DUB and subtitle options. Herbert Stothart's score and pieces like Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance sound beautiful. The disc is region FREE playable worldwide. Short War Feature - entitled Blitz Wolf
Extras lose the photo gallery from the DVD but gain another short animated feature - entitled 'Blitz Wolf' essentially mocking Nazi-ism with a warning about racial and ethnic prejudices of the day.
I love Wyler's storytelling ability and while propaganda-leaning, this is a story of courage and communal spirit fighting an injustice. Definitely, a film I want in my Blu-ray collection. ***
ON THE DVD: Again, not so much a comparison as praising the stunning Warner DVD. It shows some damage but this is very film-like presentation. Beautiful contrast with prevalent film grain. This DVD is sharp, perfect black levels, solid sound and a host of timely Extras. I won't defend my purchase of the Taiwan import 2 years ago excepting that it allowed me to see this Wyler masterpiece - and for $9 it was not a bad purchase at the time. However this Warner ranks up with their best. A wholehearted recommendation. |
