(aka "Addiction")

Directed by Abel Ferrara

USA 1995

The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy flocked to genre, as did high-calibre filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, veterans Wes Craven and John Landis, independents Michael Almereyda and Jeffrey Arsenault, and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro. Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, The Conjuring) is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realizes this isn't any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood...

Having made a big-budget foray into science fiction two years earlier with Body Snatchers, Ferrara's approach to the vampire movie is in a lower key. Shot on the streets of New York, like so many of his major works including The Driller Killer, Ms. 45 and Bad Lieutenant - and beautifully filmed in black and white, The Addiction sees the filmmaker on his own terms and at his very best: raw, shocking, intense, intelligent, masterful.

Director Abel Ferrara applies his eccentric vision to the vampire genre with this cerebral "Art" film about graduate philosophy student Kathleen Conklin (Lili Taylor), who is bitten by an aggressive female vampire (Annabella Sciorra) and soon spirals into a nightmarish world of blood addiction and existential angst. Driven by her merciless condition, she attacks several of her pretentious friends and classmates (even her professor) and mainlines their blood like heroin. Just as she becomes more bold in seeking prey on the streets of New York, she is waylaid by a potential victim -- actually a sophisticated vampire himself named Peina (Christopher Walken), who chooses to control his own blood addiction through fasting and meditation. Seeming to regain her self-control, she eventually completes her graduate thesis (helped by a bit of vampire nepotism) and holds a party to celebrate, inviting the entire faculty as well as members of her new "family" to join in the festivities. Although the parallels to heroin addiction are in plain view, this is also a study in the essential evil of humankind -- a theme evident in much of Ferrara's work.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

For  Abel Ferrara's "The Addiction", Arrow Video has gone back and performed a brand-new restoration from a 4K scan of the original camera negative, approved by the director and DoP Ken Kelsch. The results are very strong. Hardly a scratch can be seen. The film is presented in 1080p on a dual-layered Blu-ray. The film has a maxed out bitrate and looks impressive in motion. The light and (more importantly) shadows look fully fleshed out here, with a wonderful contrast. The transfer makes the film look as if it could have been filmed yesterday.

Arrow has restored the audio in 5.1 DTS-HD (24-bit) in the original English language. This track really showcases an impressive separation that doesn't overwhelm the listener with distractions, rather subtly emphasizes an unsettling tone. There is also a linear PCM 2.0 (24-bit) track that is equally impressive. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles on this region A/B (FREE)
Blu-ray.

Arrow include an audio commentary with Abel Ferrara, moderated by critic and biographer Brad Stevens. It is an interesting listen, with a lot of information being conveyed over the film. Found it interesting that Ferrara claims to have chosen to shoot in Black and White after seeing "Wings of Desire". "Talking with the Vampires" is a brand new documentary about the film, made by Ferrara especially for this release, featuring actors Christopher Walken and Lili Taylor, composer Joe Delia, Ken Kelsch, and Ferrara himself. In the 16-minute "Interview with Abel Ferrara", the director talks about everything from his choice of having a female protagonist to the camerawork of Ken Kelsch. The extra, the 8-minute "Appreciation by Brad Stevens" has Stevens (film critic) talking about the film. The 9-minute extra, "Abel Edits the Addiction" is an interesting curiosity, showing the director in his element during the editing of the film. There is also a gallery and the film's trailer is included.

1995 showcased two directors dealing with the serious topic of addiction, through the lens of vampirism; Larry Fessenden's "Habit", and Abel Ferrara's "The Addiction". Both films are tragic masterpieces in their own right, and would surely make for one hell of a downer of a double-bill. Arrow Video gives us an immaculate transfer here, loaded with interesting extras including a director commentary. And of course, Lili Taylor is typically outstanding. This is a must-own for Ferrara fans.
