directed
by Martin Scorsese
U.S. 1991
Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese
brings heart-pounding suspense to one of the most acclaimed thrillers of
all time in Cape Fear. Earning an Academy Award® nomination for
his brilliant performance, Robert De Niro stars as vicious psychopath
Max Cady who emerges after being imprisoned for fourteen years with a
single-minded mission - to seek revenge on his attorney Sam Bowden (Nick
Nolte). Realizing he is legally powerless to protect his beautiful wife
Leigh (Jessica Lange) and his troubled teenage daughter Danielle (Juliette
Lewis) against Max's relentless psychological torment, Sam resorts to
unorthodox measures, leading to an unforgettable, action-packed showdown
on Cape Fear.
*** After Jonathan Demme's
The Silence of the Lambs, the release of Martin Scorsese's
hypnotically engrossing Cape Fear locks into place the most
exciting movie trend of the year. If this remake of the terrifically
nasty 1962 classic takes off at the box office (and I can't imagine that
it won't), 1991 is poised to go down as the year of the humanistic
thriller-the year in which Demme and Scorsese, the two greatest American
film artists now working, infused imaginative new blood into the genre
of psychos, shock cuts, and showdowns in dark places. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Universal - Region FREE - Blu-ray - Oct 11': Firstly, a few of these 1080P captures are NOT exact matches with the DVDs - I had the impediment of a non-removable time-bar to contend with and some of the frames are slightly mismatched. I kept seeking signs of digital cleansing by Universal but it appears to be free and looks remarkably sharper beside both DVDs. Skin tones cool off and generally look more accurate. The Universal HD is dual-layered with a high bitrate utilizing the VC-1 encode. It's a notable step beyond the SDs although devoid of grain and texture. It gave me a great presentation but I am still a little suspicious although DNR nor edge-enhancement seem to be prevalent. The Herrmann/Bernstein score sounds imposing via Universals DTS-HD Master 5.1 at an impressive 4093 kbps. Depth and bass are readily apparent and it almost overtakes the film experience. Separations exist but I never found them crisp but the overall aural soundstage is frequently aggressive and flawless. There are optional subtitles on the Region FREE disc. Supplements mirror the previous DVD releases with the extensive 'Making of...', 10-minutes of deleted footage, the brief Behind the Scenes of the July 4th Parade and On the Set of the Houseboat plus the Photograph Montage, Mattte Paintings and enjoyable Saul Bass Opening Credits piece - all in 480i.
The
Blu-ray
is offered at a good price and the audio may b worth
that alone. Superbly crafted film - intense and riveting
- strongly recommended!
