(aka 'Rough Sketch')
directed by John
Huston
USA 1949
China Valdes (Jennifer Jones) joins the Cuban underground after her brother is killed by the chief of the secret police, Ariete. She meets and falls in love with American expatriate Tony Fenner (John Garfield). Tony develops a plan to tunnel under the city's cemetery to a plot owned by a high official, assassinate him, and blow up the whole Cuban hierarchy at the ensuing state funeral. Together with a band of dedicated revolutionaries, they begin digging. A real Huston gem... a totally buried classic film.

Although a meager
offering from Columbia Tri-Star, the image is very good. Super black
levels from a very clean print. Quite a lot of grain showing which is a
good sign that no excessive manipulations have occurred... and I don't
see any chroma or moireing either. Those yellow subtitles will be the
death of me yet, and there are no extras worth discussing. A ho-hum
effort on the package, but at least the film is intact and Jen Jones
looks as radiant as ever.
