There are certain events that occur in our lifetime that are so unjustly
reported to us that it is becomes too astounding for our comprehension and we
dismiss it totally - much of society's response is to just accept their own oblivious
attitude. Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed
in the space of 100 days. That is 800,000 human beings. 100,000 homeless starving
orphans remained. Most of the dead were Tutsis - and most of those who perpetrated
the violence were Hutus. You may have missed many of the details in the news as
the Nancy Kerrigan figure skating incident took much precedence on many
journalistic fronts. The genocide was sparked by the death of the Rwandan
president Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali
airport on 6 April 1994. One sub-story of this incident the Canadian Armed
Forces General Romeo Dallaire was put in charge of a doomed UN peacekeeping
force during this 1994 genocide. His proposal called for 5,000 soldiers to
permit orderly elections and the return of the refugees. Nothing like this
number was supplied and an unspeakable horror emerged. One of the most
catastrophic events of
the 20th century . Dallaire's cathartic book "Shake Hands with the Devil :
The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda" and this film explore not only our
failure as a society for being informed, but hence touches upon our values and
concern for our fellow
man. It is really how one man
responded in the face of this tragedy. His numerous suicide attempts since
indicate the gravity of how this has affected him - one man - one human - just
like you or I. This films is a masterpiece of introspection and documentation.
It cannot, and should not, be ignored. out

Shot with DV the
image quality of this DVD is excellent. Archival footage is
obviously not in as good a shape,
but that is understandable. I saw very minor combing and this was in no
way impinging upon the viewing experience. This dual-layered DVD is
stacked. 2 separate commentaries accompany 2 short featurettes, photo
gallery and more. The 5.1 audio is clear. Its only failing as a DVD is
there are no subtitles, but otherwise this is easily MicroFilms best
project to date. Outstanding work!
