``Under the Skin'' begins with a hand drawing abstract images while, in a voice-over, a young woman talks about her family problems. It takes a minute to figure out that the canvas is the woman's naked body.

This startling opening sets the tone for a bold and original -- if disturbing -- new film out of England. Shrinks have long known that after a divorce or death, some people become promiscuous as a way to forget. But ``Under the Skin'' may be the first movie to focus on this reaction to loss.

It's strong stuff. The raw sex scenes, including realistic portrayals of masturbation and phone sex, are not for everyone.

Comments:

There are certain limitations that you can recover from a purposely frugal film shooting. The process guides what you can achieve. Still this BFI DVD has some weaknesses. It has a black border around the entire non-anamorphic image maximizing neither the horizontal nor vertical resolution. There are no subtitles. At times the image looks heavy - almost saturated. I am having trouble with the secondary audio channel - it is out of sync. The default track is fine and I don't even know if the secondary one is meant to be included. On the positive - you can see some grain in the image leading me to believe this is a straight transfer - not much BFI could do for improvement. The short film "Fever" is pretty appropriate for inclusion with this film. this is a very graphic and interesting film - dealing with a relatively unbroached subject.

NOTE: I know there is a Region 1 release (Arrow Video?) of this film and if we can get our hands on it we will do a comparison. It looks to be out-of-print.
