(aka 'Yagyû ichizoku no inbô" or "Intrigue of the Yagyu Clan" or "The Shogun's Samurai" or "The Yagyu Conspiracy" or "Yagyu Clan Conspiracy")

directed by Kinji Fukasaku
Japan 1978

This film offers the most extraordinary battle sequences in any chambara (samurai film).

- Japanese Cinema Essentials Handbook

This is nirvana for Samurai film fans combining Sonny Chiba, Toshiro Mifune, Etsuko Shiomi, Henry Sanada and Kinji Fukasaku. It is beautifully shot, an engaging story, magnificent action sequences. Too much!

Following the death of the Shogunate, it becomes evident that his death was no accident. He was poisoned because he wanted his eldest som to be heir to the throne. A war between the eldest... and the younger brother erupts. Warriors take sides swearing devotion to their respective lords. Behind the scenes pulling the strings is the Yuga Family. Will power be restored to the throne?

Comments:

What a treat! - HD-sourced and looking perfect in the 2.40 widescreen. Colors are muted, great contrast, sharp, this is all very good folks. The only area of lacking is in the extra department - 3 trailers and some liner notes. Solid audio as well with a clear original 2.0 track. Ohhh, I don't like the color of the subtitles (nitpicker). Super action sequences and I can't remember them looking any better... in any DVD. Beautiful film and beautiful DVD transfer.  out of
