directed by William Dieterle
USA 1937

A slowly paced, however interesting life story, of an author named Emile Zola circa France late 1800's. The credits state quite clearly how the biography the film proposes is indeed fictionalized. He sought out social injustice, exposing it where he could and the latter half of the film focuses on his trial for libel. The film is somewhat dated although Paul Muni does a dignified job for his lead character. It was highly regarded it 37' receiving multiple nomination and awards, including best picture. It has since been added to the National Film Registry. A great evening for lovers of classic cinema.out of

Comments:

Warner are such a great DVD production company. This DVD is really stacked with some great extras from their vault. With respect to the image quality of the main feature - it is very strong, but perhaps weaker than other early Warner offering. There is some very infrequent damage and the image is a little soft - no doubt, a result of age of the film. A wonderful DVD package by Warner for this Best Picture Oscar winning film.  out of
