(aka 'Killer Meets Killer')
Directed by
William Keighley
USA 1939
Cagney is Frank Ross, an innocent newspaperman who is sent down by a corrupt district attorney. Once banged up, he connects with hardened con Stacey (Raft) and a whole host of other criminals who he wants nothing to do with. After his parole is turned down, he becomes as embittered and hard as the rest of the inmates until Stacey befriends him and the two men hatch a plan to escape. Cagney's searing performance takes this fairly standard Warner Bros prison drama up a notch, transforming it into an edgy little number which fairly rattles along. |

Hard to imagine anyone but Cagney in this role once you have seen the film. This is a well thought out crime/thriller prison flick that later films like Shawshank Redemption gathered impedes from. This progressive transfer looks acceptably detailed with slightly blended grey-tones. It had moments of strong sharpness and overall is quite good. There is some flickering contrast and damage but overall is as good as the other transfers in the 'Tough Guys' package. Audio is not steallar (crisp) but clear and consistent enough for enjoyment of the film. Unusually this offers no English subtitle option - only French and Spanish. Haden Guest's commentary is very good - I hope to hear more from him in the future. Other supplements include a new featurette (Stool Pigeons and Pine Overcoats), a Tex Avery cartoon (Detouring America) and more. Prison film devotees will love this entry and Cagney is as good as ever. Another recommendation (of course)! |
