(aka 'The Man Who Came Back')
This is commonly known as Jean Renoir's first American film (1941), although Renoir scholar Alexander Sesonske has established that Renoir's creative role in the project was severely hampered by producer Darryl F. Zanuck and that he didn't regard much of the film as his own. (The ending, for instance, was written by Zanuck and directed by Irving Pichel.) Nevertheless, the film has certain beauties and pleasures. Part of it was shot in Georgia's Okefenokee swamp, and the treatment of the small community living nearby is often pungent and distinctive. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were ripped directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region FREE Blu-ray - February 2012: Firstly, I couldn't get exact frames as there is a time-bar when in pause. The Twilight Time is single-layered but bare-bones and the image is decent - actually pretty good with a high bitrate. I'd have appreciated more grain but the layering of the contrast is pleasing. The same damage on the DVDs (mostly light scratches) remains. Audio is lossless but authentically flat - there are no subtitles offered. Extras consist solely of the Isolated Score - which doesn't really elevate the package beyond bare-bones. I really like this film and the film-like 1080P is appreciated. It is region FREE and limited to 3,000 copies.***
ADDITION: Japanese Fox - December 2010: Similar releases - the dual-layered Japanese NTSC version is a bit crisper and it has no PAL speed-up for those who are sensitive. No extras but both offer English subtitles. At the time of this writing the UK DVD is about 1/4 the price without even taking into account shipping. Unfortunately still not available in region 1. You'd have to be pretty discerning to consider an upgrade but the option is available. ***
ON THE UK DVD: The image falls somewhere in the mid
range category. Progressive with acceptable contrast, there may have
been some black boosting.
It is not overly sharp
but gives a good representation of the 65 year old film that shows very
little damage but compression artifacts exist. Overall, I would say it
is consistent and acceptable. Ditto for the 2 channel audio. As with
other of these Studio Classics from Fox we have a single layered disc
with no extras. Purchases will rely heavily upon the film and its lack
of alternative digital release in Region 1 ( As for the film, I enjoyed it. Although not vintage Renoir, his presence is easy to distinguish and the film has some great atmosphere. Sure... we recommend! |
