(aka 'Gruppo di famiglia in un interno' or 'Violence et passion')
Directed by
Luchino Visconti
Italy / France 1974
When Lancaster's professor opts for a quiet life in a solitary Roman palazzo, the last thing he expects is for the room upstairs to be rented by a vulgar Italian family and his cozy, ordered life to be completely turned upside down by their antisocial lifestyle. It's an unusual role for the Hollywood heavyweight but he does well, more than holding his own against some genuinely unpleasant characters and giving depth to this art house outing.

At the time of this review the price on this DVD from Amazon.UK is extremely reasonable (60% off). Granted we have a real bare-bones DVD here with no extras or subtitle options, but the image quality is not bad at all and it is dual-layered. Anamorphic and progressive although our bitrate indicates a possible analogue transfer - it sure doesn't look like it to me. Color balance is acceptable although reds seem a bit flush at times. Detail is very good with hints of digital noise (faux grain). I really enjoyed the film and both Visconti fans and Lancaster fans will thoroughly appreciate it. At this price it's a must-buy DVD. |
