Abril is the newsreader who decides to get in touch with her estranged mother, a celebrated singer (Paredes). Their painful reunion is complicated even further as Abril is now married to her mother's former lover. When her mother rekindles the affair and he ends up dead, both find themselves under suspicion. Almodóvar's tragicomedy is occasionally - as one would expect from this director - overblown and extravagant, but generally Almodóvar is in a more restrained mood than usual, which becomes especially evident in the extraordinarily moving scene when Abril reacts to the death of her husband live on air. It is when he is in this mode that Almodóvar can't help showing his maturity, and one day he will make his masterpiece, but High Heels is not quite it. Abril shows what a versatile actress she is and it is impossible to imagine the film without her moving performance.

get to see another great Almodóvar film with English subtitles on DVD!!
I'm very pleased with the image; it's very clear, I only noticed a few
specks of dirt at the beginning of the film but after that it's very
clean. Almodóvar loves to use bright, vivid colors in his films and this
transfer brings them out the way they should be. I didn't notice any of
the more obvious problems like edge enhancement or ghosting. So a very
good-looking transfer overall. The 2.0 Spanish track is pretty strong,
especially when it comes to Ryuichi Sakamoto's excellent score, although I
did hear some hiss during the quieter scenes. The English subs are very
well done - I didn't notice any errors whatsoever. The only extras are a
very short TV spot (with English subs) and a trailer gallery. Sony
recently announced plans for an 8-film Almodóvar retrospective in 2006;
unfortunately HIGH HEELS was not among those films. This release looks to
be the only English-friendly version other than an identical Dutch
release; There is apparently a French 2-disc collector's edition (along
with a 1-disc version) but I highly doubt it has English subtitles. Overall - as a huge fan of Pedro Almodóvar, I'm very happy to have this film on DVD with English subtitles. It doesn't really have any extras, but the film and the high quality transfer makes up for that. |
