Adapted into massive hit in the summer 2004 box office in Japan, the film Crying Out Love, In The Centre Of The World is directed by Yukisada Isao (from Go) and starring Osawa Takao (Gege) and Shibasaki Kou (One Missed Call)
Shikoku is the place where Sakutaro met his first love, Aki (Nagasawa Masami). Sakutaro and Aki are deeply with one another, but Aki suffered from a fatal disease and passed away. While Sakutaro is seraching for Ritsuko, he was looking through objects from his past, and he discovers a message from Aki...
A great story
that, for many, may have crossed the line of over-sentimentality that it so
incessantly flirts with throughout the films entire 2+ hours. Filled with
memorable star-crossed scenes the cinematic beauty seems more than enough to
carry through its finale. An adeptly directed and worthy effort from Yukisada
that finds its niche of followers, if not establishing itself quite at the
heights of films like Iwai's
Love Letter. Don't go by me though, I'm
somewhat jaded - I'm sure many will love it if you give yourself over to it's
stunning visuals and unique melodramatic conventions.

I would say that this anamorphic and progressive image is definitely above average with a slight deduction for the heavy black border around the edge limiting horizontal resolution. It's pretty crisp with muted colors and decent contrast. The audio is wonderful and really powers the great soundtrack of the film. This DVDs failing are the English subtitles which are, for some reason, in conjunction with Chinese ones (see below). The disc takes up 7.5 healthy Gig so there seems to have been enough space to do them separately. A strange and poor choice of DVD production. No extras save a trailer. For those that might be keen you may as well spring for the Japanese version (the standard - not the boxset) as it definitely would improve your viewing experience. |
