Michael Curtiz
USA 1955
An unlikely trio of cons - Bogart, Ustinov, Ray - escape Devil's Island, and become involved in the family affairs of a French merchant (Carroll). The daughter of the house (Talbott) is having romantic difficulties; evil cousin André (Rathbone) is poised to throw them out on to the street. Over-produced and mostly boring period comedy that's too relentlessly twee to hold the attention - the post-Christmas dinner musical number, for instance, is a moment of eye-watering badness. Still, as Ustinov is a wife-murdering safe-cracker and Ray a sociopath with a predilection for poisonous snakes, it does have a hopeful message to offer about the reform of hardened criminals. |

Another fairly impressive image quality release from Paramount. Colors look quite bright and the image has some infrequent haziness. Tight, anamorphic and progressive. Overall, for the money, much better than one might expect. I suspect that Paramount may be using a different transfer process as this is free of gloss and superior to some of their other recent releases. |
