Quite honestly I didn't like this film one bit... yet, I was strangely drawn to complete my viewing, where in the past I might have simply left mid-stream (which I don't do often). Ugly characters in an ugly surrounding with a few of them honestly confessing stories of humiliation, cruelty, warped desire with flashbacks to their past. It involved extremely unpleasant mind games in the surroundings of a war-torn militaristic repression right outside the walls of the stately home where this group of, supposed, friends are dining. I expect that has some meaning to the context of the film - almost Bunuel-ian, but it only intensified the films caustic dynamic to me. I'm sure some might get something out of it, if only that Sonia Braga bares her breasts. This is a dark tale of the lower shell of humanity - the antithesis of Tran's "The Vertical Ray of the Sun". out of |

This DVD appears to be out-of-print ... but surely not on the strength of the digital transfer, or the film for that matter. The Full Frame ratio looks improper to me, yet I can't find confirmation that it should be anything else. This DVD is non-progressive and is rife with bad instances of 'combing' - see last large capture. It is hazy and dull, weak audio, no subtitles and no real extras worth discussing. This is, in fact, a typical Fox Lorber product. As with our feelings about the film, we don't recommend. out of |
