Tavernier directed this film from a screenplay by his former
wife, Colo Tavernier O'Hagen.
There must be elements of autobiography in it for both of them - especially
when you
remember his two earlier films, "A Week's Vacation" (1982) and "Sundays in the
Country" (1989). Both told of children going to visit their fathers with a
mixture of love
and anger, and both showed fathers who were admirable and lovable but also
self-centered and flawed.
It's that extra complication that makes "Daddy Nostalgia" so much more than
just a sweet
leave-taking. The movie knows that even as we die, we hang onto our weaknesses
as
fondly as our strengths.
That dying people are selfish, all the more so because their resources are
dwindling, and
that even some of their good, generous, loving actions are done with complex
motives. On
one level this is a heartwarming movie. On another, it is a wise and even a
bitter one.

a pleasure to watch a film from Bertrand Tavernier. He is a master to use
the
cinema-scope format in daily life drama. It so few directors who actually
use the whole
frame artistically. So shall we be pleased that this DVD is in the correct
OAR? Taken from a non-progressive source, most probably from a PAL master, it doesn't look good, but not impossible bad either. The image is quite soft and there's a lot of combing and ghosting. The most irritating thing is that almost every picture change has two frames on the top of one another, added with combing (see # 7). This certainly destroys the continuity in the editing. Also the colors seems very flat to be correct. The subtitles are yellow on the black border. Because of the 2.35:1 ratio it can be adjusted to fit the 16:9 screen. Not horrible, but you wish it was better all the time you watch it. NOTE: Unfortunately this seems to be at the time the only English subtitled version. If I understand correct the French disc (R2) don't have English subtitles on the French speaking parts.  out of
