(aka "Dare mo shiranai" or "Nobody Knows" )

directed by Hirokazu Koreeda
Japan 2004

Somewhere in the middle of this picture, I reconciled myself with the idea that I didn't need to anticipate any evolution on the plot since I was convinced that I was living a true experience! A story that can be shown in less than half an hour unfolds into a series of extraordinary cinema moments. Koreeda has zoomed with incredible detail into the child condition, so much that anyone can relate and recall childhood memories of his/her own even if they don't resemble at all with the film's story.

ADDITION: Capri Releasing - Region 1 (September 05): - Well, this wasn't what I was expecting - I opening my mail, from Canada, and out popped this 'Capri Releasing' DVD with the Warner logo on it, rather than an MGM one that I was expecting. Frankly, I thought if MGM were to produce this DVD it would be very inferior to the Japanese Emotion (and it may prove to be). I see the MGM one is still available at US Amazon and this Capri Releasing edition is from Amazon Canada. I am pleasantly surprised as I was dreading an MGM release of this great film.

The good - the image is in its proper ratio - 1.66... and is anamorphic, and progressive (as it should be).

The bad - it appears to have been brightened, is slightly less sharp, and has no extras. I am also not a fan of yellow subtitles but they appear to be complete, accurate (as far as I can tell) with no absentee gaps or spelling/grammar flaws.

The image is so brightened that some detail has been lost in the background (see last large capture). So both editions have some flaws. You can see how much is missing from within the frame in the Emotion release, but it is sharper with a better color balance. What has been cropped on the Emotion is really only on the top of the frame.

Overall very irritating. Hopefully, we will get some comparable caps of the MGM and these flaws removed. It doesn't seem like we are asking much - I'd like an un-manipulated image in its intended aspect ratio. Some relevant extras with subs if necessary?  What the @#$# ?

*****

Emotion release:

Image can be soft and grainy, most likely intended, over all satisfactory, beautiful colors and not much to complain about - a fine transfer. Audio is very good and English subtitles seem to be adequate. Unfortunately 2nd disc containing extras does NOT feature English subtitles.

I can confirm that the theatrical image of "Nobody Knows" is indeed quite soft when I saw it in the theatre a few weeks ago. The projectionist ended up cropping about the bottom 10%  image just because they couldn't bother to frame it properly (ragged top edge) but I was told by the management it looked fine to them... grr. (Thanks Vic!)
