Director Anthony Mann again teams with screenwriter Phil Yordan to explore the
nullifying psychological pressure and physical debilitations caused by war. Set
in Korea (although could have been any campaign), a platoon is precariously
wedged behind enemy lines and surrounded by the threat of snipers, land mines
and yet must continue marching toward imminent enemy confrontation. Lieutenant
Benson (Robert Ryan) is barely holding his men together - add in Sergeant
Montana (Aldo Ray), from another troop, who is intent on helping his cationic
shell-shocked colonel (Robert Keith). Keep your eye a young Vic Morrow as a
confused teenager too immature for the experience. Mann leaves us a realistic
glimpse of the tense interpersonal moments of men pushed into a hostile conflict
that no amount of training could prepare them for. Another Mann masterpiece. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Olive Films - Region 'A' - Blu-ray - April 14': This film is so good. Olive give it a 1.78:1 transfer, single-layered but it looks okay. There is some, frame-specific, minor speckles and scratches and an unfortunate background hiss in the lossless mono audio track (this settles down as the film rolls). Bare bones, no subtitles or extras but I just love this film so much. You must see this if you have not already and the imperfect Olive Blu-ray is the best bet so far.*** ON THE DVD: Excellent transfer by Wild Side Video. Great shadow detail, contrast and black levels. It surely beats the out-of-print Parade edition DVD in Region 1 that people are getting obscene prices for HERE. Original audio and optional
French subtitles. This is both a superb film and great, if extra-less,
DVD. No reason not to pick this up next order to Amazon France. |
