Nobody will laugh in disbelief at Autumn Tale (1998). The last and best of his "Tales of the Four Seasons," it's about the difficulties and pleasures of rediscovering love in middle age. Many of Rohmer's recent features have been limited by their concentration on youth, which can make it difficult to tell some of them apart--a problem shared by some of the late films of Yasujiro Ozu (many of which are also named according to the seasons: Late Spring, The End of Summer, An Autumn Afternoon, etc). Yet Autumn Tale is nicely balanced between youth and middle age (Rohmer's own present age group appears not to interest him at all).

Comments The picture quality in this Artificial-Eye DVD is extremely beautiful. The picture looks sharp and has, even in dark scenes, a wonderful dept. The DVD is presented in 1:1.33, even tough it looks like an Open Matte print, masked in the cinemas as 1:1.66.

I don't know the preferred screen ratio for this film (some directors seems to prefer air above the actors head), but the picture has been composed to fit (also) widescreen cinema. I don't know why we couldn't get a flipper, with the cinema ratio on the other side. Now someone is most probably watching this in 1:1.33 framing with "smart link" options that stretch the picture to fit the widescreen, instead of zooming the picture.

The English subtitles are to low in the picture to be zoomed to widescreen, without cropping the top of the frame. Artificial-Eye has on the DVD cover "Enhanced for widescreen TV's, but the only thing enhanced is the menu pages! On the extras is a short audio interview with Eric Rohmer talking of Tales of the Four Seasons, with clips from the films.

Overall a fine DVD, with good picture quality.
