A full frontal assault on America as the worlds police, ”Team America:
World Police” is not only one of last years best films, but another
display of Trey Parkers biting satire and genius.
After blowing Paris up, and thus saving it from terrorist attacks, Team
America realizes that Arabs are behind the use of WMD. They hire Gary
Johnston, a great actor, to impersonate Arabs and thus help locate the WMD.
But after blowing Cairo up, a group of terrorists blow up the Panama
Canal, and Team America realizes, that their attack on the Arabs didn’t
bring them any closer to world peace.
Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin and other actors from the Film Actors Guild,
protest. Joining forces with the real villain, North Korean Kim Jung-Il,
they are going to introduce the FAG way of making world peace at a peace
conference in North Korea, during which Kim Jung-Il will blow up the
entire world, an attack 2371 times worse than 9/11.
Originally intended as a parody on the films of Bruckenheimer and Bay,
“Team America: World Police” soon became the most complex puppet
production ever. Advanced miniature animatronics puppet heads were
designed to give them a life like quality, huge sets were constructed and
while Parker had decided to use puppets, as it seemed to be simple and
easy, he soon realized, that it required more time and effort than any
other production form.
Full of great songs with incredible stupid lyrics (“I miss you as much as
Pearl Harbor sucked”, “We need a montage”), full of incredible lame
dialogue (“What does he see in him? I don’t know, but I think I see it
too”) and with some incredible cinematography by Bill Pope (“The Matrix”,
“Bound”), “Team America: World Police” is one of the most offensive
satires ever made, pulling now blows, making fun over everyone and
everything.

Presented in glorious OAR of 2.40:1, the
image is amazing. There are slight problems with colors, red
does bleed, but besides that, no compression artifacts or problems. It
simply looks damn good. The reviewed DVD is the Danish R2 edition, which is uncut, and thus contains the infamous puppet sex sequence. The 5.1 track is pretty good. Very clear dialogue, very heavy woofer action during explosions, but rears feel a bit neglected. The additional material begins with several "Behind the Scenes" featurettes, which run a good hour and takes you behind the idea of the film, its design and production, guided by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with commentaries by Bill Pope, the Chiodo brothers and others. Following this are some deleted scenes, which are a laugh to watch, then animated story board sequences and trailers. An audio commentary would have been appreciated, but no such thing. However, overall, great and very insightful additional material. The R1 "Uncensored and Unrated Special Collector's Edition" is identical in material and sound, (but has additional 2.0 Dolby Digital French and Spanish dubs.) It also contains more explicit sex, involving pee and poo. |
