(aka 'Dead Image" or "Who Is Buried in My Grave?')

directed by Paul Henreid
USA 1964

Great timeless film story of the "good sister" obtaining revenge on the "evil sister" by murdering her and switching places. I found the film very evenly paced and very well thought out. It becomes human nature to envision yourself as the "protagonist liar" reconsidering what you might do in their shoes to insure the successful cover-up. An aged Bette Davis thrived in the dual role and Karl Malden was 'stand-pat' as the detective boyfriend.  Perhaps just outside the nebulous definition of Film Noir, it still has some familiar elements. More of a thinker than a thriller, but its entertainment value is very high, even with some melodramatic moments. out of

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were ripped directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Warner - Region FREE - Blu-ray (October 2012): The new 1080P image is thicker with plenty of grain texture - the SD did an okay job of exporting that aspect of the film but the Blu-ray sends it to a higher, more film-like level. Those with a more discerning eye or who project larger will see the higher degree of superiority on the single-layered Blu-ray disc. The audio is transferred in an authentic lossless mono track and there are optional subtitles.

We get the same extras - the commentary, 2 video extras and the trailer. The film is all Davis (again) with her dominating with here eyes and gestures. I enjoyed it even more after not seeing it for 5 years. Fans of Bette will want to indulge.

***

ON THE DVD: What a stacked DVD! Not part of any Boxset in its release it marks another triumph in DVD production for Warner - well-contrasted 16X9 image, commentary and valued featurette and at a reasonable price. Negatives would be the cover design, albeit from the old poster and the image shows some softness, but is overall a strong expression of the film. I was particularly impressed with Davis Biographer Hadleigh and his detailed information regarding this film.
