John Lurie knows absolutely nothing about fishing, but that doesn’t stop him from undertaking the adventure of a lifetime on Fishing With John. Traveling with his special guests to the most exotic and dangerous places on earth, John Lurie battles sharks with Jim Jarmusch off the tip of Long Island, goes ice fishing with Willem Dafoe at Maine’s northernmost point, braves the Costa Rican jungle with Matt Dillon, takes Tom Waits to Jamaica, and searches for the elusive giant squid with Dennis Hopper in Thailand.

I will make a guess that this is Criterion's worst seller... and maybe it shouldn't be. I had read about it and wasn't expecting g much, but was surprised, but not overwhelmed. It is amusing, cute and funny at times with a collective choice of enigmatic stars to garner appeal for some. It moves rather slow and the DVD quality is very poor.
A non-progressively transferred image is taken from mostly 16mm footage
which is hazy and blurry (looks like a home video), colors seem bright enough but tend to bleed.
It does tend to add to the realism of the documentaries. It has a
commentary from John Lurie, but I was not overly impressed with it nor
his "Big Heart" music video. For the most part, I don't know too many
people who this will appeal to - it is eclectic for sure, which can find
one group. Something about it seems contrived and artificial - if
only in concept. At Criterion's lower tier of pricing, we find it still
too expensive. It was a big hit in Japan (where the financing came I
think) but we don't recommend... except to a very few who may find
the allure Jarmusch, Waits and Hopper a strong enough pull.
