Japan 1955

When a wealthy foundry owner and bullying patriarch decides to move his entire family from Tokyo to Brazil to escape the nuclear holocaust which he fears is imminent, his family tries to have him declared mentally incompetent. Made at the height of the Cold War when the superpowers were engaged in series of nuclear tests, this blazing attack on complacency was one of the director's most deeply-felt but least commercially successful films. Nonetheless it deserves to be more widely known, particularly as it continues Kurosawa's critique of the patriarchal despotism rife in Japanese society.

Comments:

This is a much superior image (and DVD) to BFI's "High and Low" , also released at the same time. There is slight damage that is visible throughout and some telltale artifacts on the single-layered disc but it is progressive and appears to be from the correct standard. It looks relatively clean with good contrast. The box states the aspect ratio as 1.66, but we can see this image is 1.33, which I believe is correct (Throne of Blood made after was also 1.33).

Bio extras, removable subtitles and excellent menus make this the definitive release of this film on DVD (previous was a horrid Mei Ah coaster). We recommend till it shows up on Criterion.
