Gianni Ameilo has described in interviews how, for years, he had wanted to make a film about his father's emigration from post-war Italy to the United States. Since current events prompted an Albanian refugee crisis in Italy (circa 1990) he decided to use this as an allegory to express the tale. Neo-realistically he cast amateurs depicting most characters. He found Carmelo de Mazzarelli (Michael) on the streets of Scicily. What evolves to being a totally character driven film, we are gripped by the realistic subtlety of the performances. Even beyond the beautiful story. An extremely rewarding tale of warmth, determination, desire and love.

The
subtitles seemed to have annoying 'jaggies' in the font making reading
them not impossible, but a little aggravating. the image is quite clear
for a single layered disc. Audio was quite acceptable, if never fully
tested by the soundtrack. Extras include three deleted scenes, an
alternative ending, a photo album and a poster gallery. Standard NY'er
quality with thanks for bringing Region 1 such a wonderful film.
