Directed by Sebastián Lelio
 Ireland | UK | USA 2017

From Sebastián Lelio, writer-director of the Academy Award-winning A FANTASTIC WOMAN, DISOBEDIENCE is a timely and emotionally powerful tale set at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, of personal desires and the demands of faith. When her estranged rabbi father suddenly passes away, Ronit (played by Oscar-winner and co-producer Rachel Weisz) returns from New York to the north London Orthodox Jewish community she rejected years previously after a scandalous transgression. Ronit s presence immediately courts further controversy when she unknowingly runs into Esti (Rachel McAdams), the wife of her strictly religious cousin Dovid (Alessandro Nivola) and the woman for whom she shared an illicit attraction in their childhood. This happy reunion soon reignites the two women s burning, long-unrequited passions, an act of defiance that could alter the course of their lives forever. Based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author Naomi Alderman and co-written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, DISOBEDIENCE is a critically acclaimed romantic drama that explores the fraught boundaries between spiritual devotion and sexuality.

***

Photographer Ronit Krushka returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for her childhood attraction to a female friend. Their reunion soon reignites their passion as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Curzon Artificial Eye bring writer-director Sebastián Lelio's Disobedience to Blu-ray. It's on a dual-layered disc in 1080P with a high bitrate. It looks as flawless as you might expect a modern film to appear in this 1080P resolution - no marks, no noise, everything is consistent and clean. It is in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio beautifully shot with a Red Dragon camera by DoP Danny Cohen. Contrast can look a shade passive but I suspect that it may have been the filmmaker's intentions - if we get another Blu-ray edition - we will compare.

The film is transferred in the option of a linear PCM 2.0 stereo, or a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track - both 24-bit in the original English language (with some Hebrew). There isn't much requirement for separation. The film features a subtle score Matthew Herbert that suits the film well. The audio quality is decent and dialogue is clear and audible. There are no subtitles offered on this Region 'B'
Blu-ray.

Extras consist of an 8-minute interview with writer/director Sebastián Lelio discussing the film, plus there is a short interview with Lelio, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. Streets of London runs a brief 4-minutes and focuses on set design. Lastly, is a trailer.

Excellent film! The two Rachels are wonderful - a film about love, faith, dishonor and an emotional bond. It has some surprises and is worth the viewing, imo.  The
Blu-ray offers the film in a 1080P presentation with a few supplements related to the production. I enjoyed this - I was especially focused on Weisz. Recommended!
