Sweden 1946

Eighteen-year-old Nelly lives a quiet life in a small town with her foster mother. There, she makes a living giving piano lessons and letting a room to Ulf, who is in love with her.
Despite her financial problems, Nelly’s foster mother manages to save enough money to buy Nelly a new dress to wear at a charity ball. However, when Nelly’s real mother, Jenny, also buys a dress, Nelly wears this instead. Attracted by the glamorous garment and the promise of a more exciting life, Nelly leaves the small town to join her mother in Stockholm. Once there, she soon discovers that there is a darker side to human nature that she never knew existed when she lived in a small town.

The Criterion Blu-ray of Crisis is part of their Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema 100th Anniversary 30 Blu-ray Boxset (reviewed, as a work in-progress, HERE). Crisis shares this Blu-ray with A Ship to India. See comparative captures, a listing of technical details, extras etc., on this page. We've compared it to the Tartan DVD captures and one from Criterion's first Eclipse Boxset "Early Bergman". The 1080P is a significant upgrade.

ON THE DVD: Bergman’s flawed debut feature is well presented by Tartan video on this disc. If you’ve seen some of the other Bergman Collection discs from Tartan, you know what to expect. It’s not Criterion quality, but it’s absolutely acceptable. For a fairly low-budget 1946 feature, it doesn’t get much better. Theirs is no extras worth mentioning. So if you wan’t to have a look into the young Bergman’s efforts, this is no bad place to start.

I give the Tartan disc 4/5 for a good presentation of the feature.
