Directed by Sammo Kam-Bo Hung (as Samo Hung)
Hong Kong 1984

From a brand new 2K restoration comes perhaps the greatest martial-arts comedy of all time, Sammo Hung's Wheels on Meals, starring Hung, Jackie Chan, and Yuen Biao as the most exciting triple act in action movie history!

Fast food chefs Thomas (Chan) and David (Biao) find themselves cooking up trouble when detective Moby (Hung) involves them in the case of a missing heiress. The three friends need all of their daring and physical dexterity when they find themselves facing a triple helping of danger.

Also starring Lola Forner (Armour of God) and Benny The Jet Urquidez (Dragons Forever), who faces off against Chan in an incredible fight sequence that is legendary amongst martial-arts film fans, Wheels on Meals has to be seen to be believed. Eureka Classics is extremely proud to present this iconic piece of action cinema on Blu-ray for the first time ever in the UK!

***

Despite its mind-bogglingly goofy title, this 1984 comedy-adventure from longtime Chan cohort Hung works to good effect, never allowing itself to become too bogged down in martial arts set pieces or the long-winded expositional scenes that have cluttered up so many otherwise fine HK offerings of late. And of the four “name” directors working in HK today -- Hung, Chan, John Woo, and Tsui Hark -- Hung is the most accessible to Western audiences in terms of being able to follow what's going on up on the screen. Subtitles, whether they're syntactically accurate or not, are almost irrelevant here. Set in a large Spanish city (maybe Madrid, maybe Barcelona; where exactly is never revealed), Chan and Biao are making ends meet by running a stylized fast-food cantina out of an obscenely garish minivan under the moniker “Everybody's Kitchen.”

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Eureka bring Wheels on Meals, another of Jackie Chan's hilarious-action films to Blu-ray. It's on a dual-layered disc in 1080P with a high bitrate. The image is quite thick but consistent coming from a 'new 2K restoration'. There are appealing textures and the film's detail may slightly improve through the running time with sharpness visible in close-ups. It looks excellent in motion if never dynamically crisp of tight - which would probably not be accurate anyway.

Eureka go to town with the audio options offering an original Cantonese track, available in both original mono (LPCM) and newly restored DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround as well as an optional English DUB from the film's international release, featuring an alternate (and much funkier) soundtrack, available in both original mono and 5.1 plus an alternate English dub track from the films 2006 DVD release (available in 5.1 only). Included is a custom audio option featuring the original Cantonese dialogue track, but mixed with the alternate soundtrack from the international release. So let's just say that all bases are covered with uncompressed tracks in all manner of choice. Aggressive effects are abundant and have some kick (no pun intended). There is a varied score credited to Chris Babida and Siu-Lam Tang. The audio quality is fine with the DUB syncs being a bit wobbly at times. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'B'
Blu-ray.

Extras consistent of a whopping pile of interviews; On Giant's Shoulders runs about 8 minutes and is an archival interview with Sammo Hung plus there is another 10-minutes with the iconic Hong Kong star in an additional archival interview. Born to Fight is a 1/4 hour archival interview with Yuen Biao. Jet Fighter is a 1/2 hour archival interview with kickboxing champion and martial-artist Benny 'The Jet' Urquidez. King of the Ring spends over 1/2 hour with martial-artist Keith Vitali. The Inside Track is a 34-minute video piece with director and action choreographer Stanley Tong. Spartan X Alternate Credits show the original Japanese version of Wheels on Meals featured an alternate blooper reel credits which would later become a traditional feature of films starring Jackie Chan (can be viewed isolated or as part of the main feature running 3 1/4 minutes) There is additional outtake footage, trailers and the package has a limited edition collector's booklet featuring a new essay by James Oliver. The latter is limited to 4,000 copies.

Well, I was all ready to be a scrooge about seeing Wheels on Meals but it only took a few minutes to get me in the mood of physical acrobatic fighting and slapstick comedy. I ended up loving every minute. The Eureka
Blu-ray leaves no stone unturned - a film-like, and competent transfer with a multitude of audio presentation options. There are plenty of supplements for fans to indulge. What's not to recommend? A must-own for Jackie Chan fans.
