ADDITION (Arrow Films - Sept 04): It's nice to see the Arrow Films has again come up to speed with these Rohmer films for English speaking audiences. Colors are vibrant, defined and rich... bordering on saturation. Regardless they look great if not of the same softer pallet of the other two. Of course the big bonus are the removable subtitles and superior image to the Fox Lorber (ABOUT TIME!). Done properly there is no ghosting ion the Arrow Films DVD. It is dark and skin tones have some excessive red in them. The extras pale in comparison to the two disc Gaumont. Still, I am happy with the Arrow Films edition as it eclipses my very old (and poorly done) Fox Lorber DVD ! *** The Gaumont comes in a Boxset with 5 other Rohmer films. None have English subtitles. According to our bitrate charts - the Fox looks to be taken from an HD Tape while the Region 2 is not (???). Of course the biggest factor involved is (again!) that Fox has not properly converted to NTSC leaving the inherent problems (ghosting, artifacts etc. ). The Gaumont is sharper and brighter, but skin tones look a little redder. Neither image shows any cropping in comparison to each other. It's a shame that the Gaumont's subtitles are superior as they don't offer English as an option. The English subs are non-removable on the Fox / Lorber. We suspect that Arrow Films will port and offer an English option very soon. The Gaumont's meager trailer is better than Fox's static text screens when it comes to extras, but the Gaumont also offers a whole 2nd disc of Rohmer's TV production "Catherine de Heilbronn" - a wonderful bonus. |
