(aka "Rang-e khoda" or "The Colour of Paradise")

directed by Majid Majidi
Iran 1999

By many compared in tone to Kiarostami’s “Where is the Friends House”, the second feature by Majid Majidi, “The Color of Paradise”, tells the story of Mohammad, who after a year in Teheran, where he learned to read Braille, returns to his village with his widowed father. Fearing that a blind son will prevent the father from marrying again, Mohammad is removed and put into apprenticeship as a carpenter.

Winner of the Grand Prix des Amériques at Montreal, “The Color of Paradise” is a painfully beautiful film about a blind boys ability to see more than others. He may be blind, but so are the adults, bound by tradition and religion. Filmed with mainly amateurs, this is a rare gem of Iranian cinema.

Comments The Optimum DVD is based on the master from Sony, which they used for their VHS release five years ago. It is pan / scan, it is very dark (even light shadows become black), has a lot of contrast (which is why I believe this is based on a theatrical print) and it lacks details. Overall a very poor image. From a company who normally excels in superior transfers, this DVD is an aberration.

The only positive thing about the transfer is, that it appears to have the films original color palette.

The Sony image is in correct OAR of 1.85:1. The color palette appears to have been altered (notice the absence of the blue filter in image #7) to a different and in some cases more vivid colors. Contrast levels are normal and besides halos and some noise, this is a beautiful transfer.
