It's obvious that the picture on this film is not going to be done correctly until Warner does an HD-DVD of it, but the stereo sound remix is so dated, from the old pre-DVD days of semi-stereo! Warner needs to go back to the original soundmasters, including Lalo Schifrin's classic score, and do a thorough 5.1 or 6.l1 remix for Dolby and DTS. Since all the new Ford Mustang cars being produced have their engines fine tuned to sound like the one in this film, it is the least Warner could do.

The new 2 Disc Edition of Bullitt beats out the old release. It's an overall improvement in quality for (almost) all departments. As you can see in the captures of the movie the new DVD is cropped on all sides and that makes me wonder why Warner Bros. did it. This is the only complain I have and therefore I give the new 2 Disc S.E. a recommendation as it is a worthy upgrade.

There are several problems with the SE transfer. It is not the true OAR of 1.85:1, but 1.78:1. On top of that the frame itself is cropped (2% left and right, 3.5% top) opposite the old frame. It is very dark. It has gotten a very healthy dose of contrast boosting. It is very grainy and there are more visible artifacts. And none of it has improved details. The only positive thing is, that the color and light levels now are balanced out and more correct. But for a SE transfer, this is not very impressive.

Region 2 has slightly more sharpness in details than Region 1, but it is only visible when zooming in. They are as such identical.

The sound on the Region 2 SE appears to be the same as on the old Region 2.

The only reason to upgrade is the additional material, which is nothing short of great. What is curious is that Warner Europe chose to place the featurette "Bullitt: Steve McQueen's Commitment to Reality" on Disc 1, thereby reducing space for the film, when it was on their Disc 2 Region 1.
