(aka "Moscow does Not Believe in Tears" or "Moscow Distrusts Tears" or "Moscou ne croit pas aux larmes")
directed by Vladimir Menshov
Soviet Union 1979
This is the touching story of three young girls who venture to Moscow in search of their destiny. They 'play the game' with men, learn, mature and find out what they really want. 20 years later we see what has befallen them and their initial ideals. Quite a fascinating look at an interesting slice of Russian life, perhaps slanted at times although it is not preachy at all. A wonderful cultural investment. We recommend. out of

Comments | Looks liker a direct port, most likely licensed from RusCiCo. The Chinese version has simply removed a few subtitle, the English and French DUB audio options and the extras, but the image is exact and also over 2 discs. Unfortunately, like all NTSC RusCiCo discs this is taken from a PAL source and has prevalent 'ghosting' and 'combing' in motion sequences (see last capture). The RusCiCo extra are fairly extensive and any interested in this film might enjoy them, although they can tend to be unrelated at times to the actual film. W e suspect that the PAL RusCiCo edition is the superior, as is the Kino edition HERE. |
