(aka "Per qualche dollaro in pił" or "For Some Dollars More")
directed by Sergio Leone
Italy / Spain / West Germany / Monaco 1965
The trademarks of Leone's style were
more apparent in the superior sequel, For a Few
Dollars More. Confrontations were drawn out, to
prolong tension. Flashbacks were used to show past
relationships between the protagonists. Partnerships
are necessary but treacherous. Advantages are
fleeting. The characters are given better motivation
for their actions: Eastwood is after much bigger money
this time around, while Van Cleef definitely has a
score to settle with Volonte.
But in several ways, For a Few Dollars More is
substantially different from its predecessor or its
follow-up, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Eastwood
may have first billing, but his character is at best
only equal to that of the more experienced and
perceptive Van Cleef. While Eastwood still wears a
serape, and chain smokes cigarettes, he's not really
the 'Man with No Name'. He's called Manko by the other
characters.
Unlike in his other films with Leone, Eastwood does
not perform any selfless deeds in For a Few Dollars
More. He doesn't rescue a wife from sexual slavery, as
in A Fistful of Dollars, or blow up a blood-soaked
bridge to fulfill a dying man's last request, as in
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Only his style, and
his murderous and mercenary characteristics remain.
While Eastwood tries to assert himself, it is Van
Cleef who calls the shots, and who has the
big showdown with the villain.

"Ask him if he can leave on
Sunday for a movie in Italy". That was on the
Friday. Lee van Cleaf said: I can leave now, I'd do it with pleasure." PICTURE: The new restored print is just beautiful. Compared with the old edition, the colors are more natural, and the picture is sharp. In the old edition the picture is a little soft and pale. The new version is cropped on both sides a little, where in the old, the frame is cropped in the bottom. No big deal here! The new version is anamorphic. Both versions have the longer Italian cut of the film. SOUND: The new DTS sound is made with prestige! The stereo sound feels almost as it was from a new film. Only the dialog track reveals occasionally that the original sound is from an mono film. The elements are in balance, and it feels that there are very few things added to the original sound. But here I most say "very few" things. I have nothing against re-mixing and restoring old sound elements, but I feel very sad that MGM Europe has taken the policy to dispose the only original sound track from the film. Added material IS added material. EXTRAS: There are a huge amount of extra-materials in the new edition. It's nice to see old masters talking about the film, but on the same time, there's nothing new in the extras. I haven't heard the commentary track. |
