ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I don't think I can identify just one release this week as a favorite - as there are so many I enjoyed. Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate remains a riveting masterpiece and is offered at a great price on Blu-ray from Amazon in Canada. Robert Rossen's The Hustler has that melancholy soundtrack that benefits from the move to hi-def. Perhaps Argento's best film 'Deep Red' is a treat on Blu-ray - ditto for Joe Dante's Matinee and Clouzot's Les Diaboliques via Criterion. The dissection of the frailty of love in Blue Valentine marks it as a modern gem. Hotel Rwanda is still incredibly impacting - referencing events more than 15 years ago - mostly ignored by the mainstream media at the time. The Twilight Zone - Season 4 allows me to sink back to a simple wondrous time of imaginative television. Curiosity wins over in a Blu-ray viewing of Coppola's Dementia 13 and the double-pack of Houdini + Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies entertained with the former alone - being worth the price of admission. On the DVD front - Margot Benacerraf’s Araya blew me away with its poetic imagery, we were able to put the microscope to a new NTSC SD version of De Sica's, once banned, Shoeshine and Gregory has me itching to settle in with another Warner Archive pulpy prison yard with his review of Experiment Alcatraz. He's also covered two from our essential Noir list; The Enforcer with Bogie (...bathed in a typically noir aura of fear, shot by Robert Burks in a semi-documentary style, and with a laconically witty script by Martin Rackin) and Cukor's A Double Life (...a curious melodrama about a Broadway matinee idol who so loses himself in his role as Othello that he carries it over, murderously, into a backstreet affair with a waitress). Enjoy!


	THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS
	The Hustler BD - Paul Newman heads a superb cast featuring Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie in the riveting film that received an Academy Award nomination as Best Picture of 1961 and brought all four of its Oscar nominations. Newman (Best Actor nominee) is electrifying as Fast Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral hustler who haunts backstreet pool rooms fleecing anyone who'll pick up a cue. Determined to be acclaimed as the best, Eddie seeks out the legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason, Supporting Actor nominee), who's backed by Bert Gordon (Scott, Supporting Actor nominee), a predatory gambler. Eddie can beat the champ, but virtually defeats himself with his low self-image. The love of a lonely woman (Laurie, Best Actress nominee) could turn Eddie's life around, but he won't rest until he beats Minnesota Fats, no matter what price he must pay. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011 The Twilight Zone - Season 4 BD - "The Twilight Zone" is unquestionably one of the greatest science fiction television shows of all time. Generally speaking, most episodes had strong elements of deeply imagined science, suspense and thought-provoking intrigue. Creator Serling had a unique and distinctive approach to the central themes of the show(s)... and it was a hit, right from its onset. A virtual spring board for many young and talented actors/actresses the original Twilight Zone has run successfully in syndication ever since. Most everyone has a favorite episode. For me The Twilight Zone original series represents pioneering television with a strong nostalgic and noirish-ly dark feel to it. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011 Deep Red BD - An English jazz pianist living in Rome witnesses the brutal hatchet murder of a renowned psychic and is quickly drawn into the savage crime. With the help of a tenacious female reporter, the pair track a twisted trail of deranged clues and relentless violence towards a shocking climax that has ripped screams from the throats of audiences for more than 35 years! Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011 Shoeshine - De Sica's film depicts the troubled lives of two young boys caught up in the chaos of a world plagued by poverty and unemployment. Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni) and Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi) work on the street, where they shine the shoes of American troops. They dream of a better life, seeking solace in a horse that they ride to escape their harsh reality. When the boys are implicated in a petty crime, they are punished by the society that has robbed them of their innocence, resulting in tragic consequences. Shoeshine is widely regarded as one of the finest films to have emerged from the Italian neorealist cinema. It was also the first foreign film to receive an Oscar. "The high quality of this motion picture," noted the Academy, "brought to eloquent life in a country scarred by war, is proof to the world that the creative spirit can triumph over adversity." DVD Release Date: May 17th, 2011 Les Diaboliques BD - Based on a novel by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac (who also wrote the novel on which Hitchcock's Vertigo is based), Les diaboliques tells the story of a sadistic headmaster (Paul Meurisse) who brutalises his wife and mistress (Véra Clouzot and Simone Signoret) and their plot to murder him. Superbly edited with nail-biting suspense, the two women murder the headmaster and dump the body in the swimming pool, but when the pool is drained no corpse is found. An unsettling and beautifully-paced study of betrayal, mistrust and guilt, Les diaboliques is atmospherically shot in black and white, its murky tones hauntingly echo the moral ambiguity of its principals. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011 Araya - Benacerraf’s tour de force ARAYA explores a day in the lives of three families living in Araya, an arid peninsula in northeastern Venezuela. For centuries, since its discovery by the Spanish, the region’s salt was collected and stacked into radiant white pyramids. Benacerraf captures breathtaking and unforgettable images – from the saliñeros toiling to build the mountains of salt, to fishermen hauling in huge teeming nets, to a young girl and her grandmother laying “flowers” of shells on windswept graves. Benacerraf's meticulously planned tone poem’s imagery, music, sound, and language create a moving and magical exploration of a desolate place and the remarkable people who lived there. DVD Release Date: May 17th, 2011 Hurry Sundown - Otto Preminger (*Anatomy of a Murder) directs this epic adaptation of K.B. Gilden's novel about racial prejudice and emotional unrest in 1940s Georgia. Henry Warren (Michael Caine) is an unscrupulous and racist landowner obsessed with buying up all available land in a Georgia farming town. Blocking his path are sharecroppers Rod McDowell (John Phillip Law) and Reeve Scott (Robert Hooks), one white and one black. The star-studded cast includes Jane Fonda, Faye Dunaway, Diahann Carroll, Burgess Meredith, Robert Reed and George Kennedy. Screenplay adapted by Thomas C. Ryan and Horton Foote. DVD Release Date: May 17th, 2011* Matinee BD - Step back into a time of outrageous movie-theater gimmicks and larger-than-life B-screen stars in this charming homage to the great sci-fi and horror flicks of the 1950s and 1960s. John Goodman is at his uproarious best as the William Castle-inspired movie promoter Lawrence Woolsey, who brings his unique brand of flashy showmanship to the unsuspecting residents of Key West, Florida. It's 1962, and fifteen-year-old fan Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton) can't wait for the arrival of Woolsey, who is in town to promote his latest offering of atomic power gone berserk, MANT!. Blu-ray Release Date: June 1st, 2011 Dementia 13 BD - Future film-making legend Francis Ford Coppola makes his big-screen directorial debut with this cult horror classic, available for the first time in spectacular High-Definition Blu-ray. Following the abrupt death of her husband from a heart attack, the scheming Louise Haloran (Luanda Anders) travels to her in-laws estate in Ireland, only to find herself trapped in a creepy, decrepit castle with her ex-husband s demented family. Upon arrival, she is introduced to a pair of maladjusted brothers (William Campbell, Bart Patton) and a distraught mother-in-law (Eithne Dunn), still grieving for the daughter she lost in a drowning accident many years earlier. When a mysterious axe-wielding psychopath enters the fray, leaving blood-spattered corpses in his wake, the family s doctor (Patrick Magee) takes it upon himself to try to get to the bottom of things--before it s too late! Blu-ray Release date: April 26th, 2011 Blue Valentine BD - A complex portrait of a contemporary American marriage, "Blue Valentine" tells the story of David and Cindy, a couple... who have been together for several years but who are at an impasse in their relationship. While Cindy has blossomed into a woman with opportunities and options, David is still the same person he was when they met, and he is unable to accept either Cindy's growth or his lack of it. Innovatively structured, the narrative unfolds in two distinct time frames, juxtaposing scenes of first love and youthful sexuality with those of disenchantment and discord. Blu-ray Release date: May 10th, 2011 Houdini + Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies BD - The wonderfully talented Tony Curtis heads up two all-star casts in these unforgettable classic films. Boasting as his first leading film role, Tony stars as the world's most captivating magician and escape artist in Houdini. From his beginnings as a 'wild man' carnival act to the internationally famous feat of escaping from a locked trunk in an ice-jammed river, Houdini effectively captures the amazing life and courage of this fascinating man. Those Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies is a hilarious, romantic and action-packed romp that follows an international, star-studded cast through the beautiful landscape of Monte Carlo. Tony Curtis stars as the dashing Shofield who teams up with the calculating Sir Cuthbert Ware Armitage (Terry-Thomas) in a zany, winner-take-all car rally beset with scheming competitors, treacherous cliffs and one very beguiling blonde (Susan Hampshire). Blu-ray Release date: May 3rd, 2011 The Manchurian Candidate BD - Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey ), returns home from the Korean War and as a hero is presented with the Medal of Valor in Washington. His domineering mother (Angela Lansbury) and Stepfather Senator Iselin (James Gregory) wrestle to grab as much positive political coverage out of his heroics and name as possible. Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) and others who served alongside him remember Shaw differently, however, in duplicated nightmares as a killer brainwashed by Dr Yen Lo, an evil hypnotist from Communist China (Khigh Dhiegh) with Russian top political brass looking on in an amphitheatre. Shaw's mother, Mrs. Iselin, playing a Joseph McCarthy representation, is revealed to be a calculating Communist Agent and her maneuvering is meant to position her husband to the presidency through assassination, with her son being the mentally manipulated hired gun. Blu-ray Release date: May 10th, 2011 Hotel Rwanda BD - In contemporary cinema, few movies are as wise or as observant of society as Hotel Rwanda, which takes the time to weave insight about the current world into its already strong narrative arc. The standard good film, nowadays, will have a few references to politics and society, but they are rarely as meaningful as those in Hotel Rwanda. The movie takes the heartbreak of a story and uses it to make viewers realize the parallels it draws. Not many of us in The United States know much, if anything, about the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 (at least those who haven’t seen this picture), and that makes the historical event all the more tragic. When viewers leave Hotel Rwanda, they will not only have a strong emotional reaction towards its moving conclusion, but will also be considering every subject it opens for discussion, such as the worthiness (or lack thereof) of the United Nations’ involvement in world affairs and the biases of the media and their very questionable motivations in choosing which stories to publish. Blu-ray Release date: May 10th, 2011 Experiment Alcatraz - Five Alcatraz inmates have found a way to escape the Rock: earn their freedom by becoming human guinea pigs in a risky radiation experiment aimed at treating blood diseases. The experiment is soon scuttled after one of the subjects goes berserk, killing another inmate. But did the tests really lead to murder? Dr. Ross Williams (John Howard of the Bulldog Drummond films) investigates, finds another possible cause…and finds his life in deadly peril as a result. Busy “poverty row” filmmaker Edward L. Cahn (Our Gang shorts, Invasion of the Saucer Men) ties a shoestring budget into a B-movie bow that bundles together elements of mystery, sci-fi, medical-drama and prison pictures. Fans of brisk Bs won’t want to let this one get away. DVD Release Date: February 22, 2011 The Enforcer - The first major Hollywood release to tackle the subject of organized crime, The Enforcer was also known as Murder, Inc. (also the film's British title). The script by Martin Rackin was based on actual events of a decade earlier, and Bogart's character was based on real-life crusading district attorney Burton B. Turkus. The subject was still topical, however; in 1950, public interest in organized crime was on the rise with the Senate Crime Investigation Committee's delving into the subject once again. (The committee was chaired by Senator Estes Kefauver, who delivers the film's spoken prologue.) DVD Release Date: December 16th, 2003 A Double Life - The first of Cukor's string of fruitful collaborations with screenwriters Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon, a curious melodrama about a Broadway matinée idol who so loses himself in his role as Othello that he carries it over, murderously, into a backstreet affair with a waitress. The theatre scenes are so brilliantly observed, so rich in the sort of affectionate detail that made The Actress a small masterpiece, that the film seems to grind gears uncomfortably when venturing into the grey and shabby B movie world of the murder. All the more so in that it then returns to its happier idiom for a grand finale of on-stage retribution. Flawed, undoubtedly, but fascinating. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2003
