Directed by Vincent Sherman
USA 1943

Adeptly directed melodrama by Vincent Sherman based on the play by John Van Druten. Established serious author Kit (Bette Davis) inspires hometown pal Millie (Miriam Hopkins) who has written a trashy novel published with Kit's overseeing. Millie's husband Preston (John Loder) leaves her. A decade of trashy novels later Millie tries to reconcile, but Preston has had enough of this back-stabbing, she-cat for one lifetime and weds another. Overwrought with pettiness and jealousies Millie accuses Kit of husband-stealing and the over-the-top performances are a joy to behold. Beware the Candice Bergen and Jacqueline Bissett (RICH AND FAMOUS) 1981 remake. This little gem is the real deal.

Comments:

This is right up there with Warner's best transfer of films of this era. Pristine contrast and a very clean image distinguish this super DVD. Only negatives are some understandable marks and some digital noise. Cap onto the lore of temperamental actresses, great performances and fun melodrama - a commentary (very thorough - terrific insights by Sherman and Hadleigh), a new featurette, an unrelated short and another classic cartoon. I honestly don't know what more we could ask for. Even the price is right but you do save by purchasing the entire Vol. 2 package. We strongly recommend!
