(aka 'Va Savoir (Who Knows?)" or "(Chi lo sa?)" or "Chi lo sa?" or "Va savoir +")
directed by
Jacques Rivette
France / Italy / Germany
2001
The Serb critic was in splendid form insulting Jacques Rivette over the somewhat stilted scenes of Pirandello in the festival opener, Va Savoir. (It's a good thing Simon hasn't heard Mr. Moviefone pronouncing it "Va Sav-ee-ore.") I can't imagine him getting incensed about the rest of the movie, however—an unexpectedly charmant little farce manqué about amour fou et trois couples qui—sorry, my ninth-grade French can somehow do more justice than my English to this peculiarly existential confection. Rivette regards the schisms and reconciliations and jealous longings of these six beautiful people with the most rapt attention imaginable—respecting them even when their most heartfelt conversations take place on opposite sides of closed and locked doors. Such focus in and of itself can be transporting. This is lovely, momentous piffle.

This DVD is extremely dark... usually this indicates that no contrast boosting has been done (commonplace now). It is moderately dull with likewise colors - I believe it to be transferred progressively - there are no extras and the subtitles are a deplorable yellow. For such a modern film I would have thought the transfer could have been improved, but it is possible that the print was in this very dark condition and this is how the film is meant to look. Extras other than self promotion would be a welcome surprise from Sony. out of
NOTE (Thanks Craig!): This Region 1 'Va
savoir' disc is not the director's cut ('Va savoir +'), which
runs 3h 40m and has only been screened publicly, to my knowledge, in
Paris, for a very short run (one or two weeks) a few months following
the release of the "theatrical cut." The extended version, which Rivette
has spoken of as comprising the film as he intended it, has not been
released anywhere on DVD yet either, so every version of 'Va savoir'
currently on disc is the producers' initial theatrical cut. |
