ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Very easy first choice - Criterion does a Blu-ray boxset of Satyajit Ray's The Apu Trilogy via an amazing restoration? - Fuhgeddaboudit! - hope you pre-ordered at the Amazon discount last month. If you want great value - John Ford's The Hurricane - masterful director, great film, Blu-ray, commentary and almost 50% OFF pre-order. Don't hesitate. Michael Curtiz' Dodge City on Blu-ray sure beats out the old DVD - notable Technicolor richness! Perhaps two less-obvious choices - I got a big kick out of 4 X Blu-ray set of The Larry Fessenden Collection - lots of horror fun from the wrong side of the tracks plus bountiful extras... and Heart of Midnight - a riveting genre mixture with a great performance from Jennifer Jason Leigh. Sold! Slam Dance on Blu-ray is also kinda funky-cool in its own way. Masters of Cinema's The Shohei Imamura Masterpiece Collection are all the previous discs - Blu-rays and DVDs - there is unreal value here at this price. Tu dors Nicole needs a bigger audience - Very worthy film and now on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. A Bullet for Joey doesn't cut the mustard as a Noir and is only a modest crime flic. If you like bad cinema - Crypt of the Living Dead can do the job with its decent premise and production values - looks good too on Blu-ray. The bonus flic, however, (House of the Living Dead) is a non-recommendation though. If Modern Girls sounds like fluff - it's because it is - but a modicum better than you might anticipate. No sale though. No DVds this week - sorry ..:“Give them pleasure. The same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.” ― Alfred Hitchcock. Go Jays Go! See you next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Shohei Imamura Masterpiece Collection BD - This 12 Disc Box Set collection brings together eight masterpieces of Japanese cinema from the career of Shohei Imamura in a deluxe box set featuring Stolen Desire (1958), Nishi Ginza Station (1958), Pigs and Battleships (1961), The Insect Woman (1963), A Man Vanishes (1967), Profound Desires of the Gods (1968), Vengeance is Mine (1979) and The Ballad of Narayama (1983.) Blu-ray Release Date: October 19th, 2015

The Apu Trilogy BD - Two decades after its original negatives were burned in a fire, Satyajit Ray’s breathtaking milestone of world cinema rises from the ashes in a meticulously reconstructed new restoration. The Apu Trilogy brought India into the golden age of international art-house film, following one indelible character, a free-spirited child in rural Bengal who matures into an adolescent urban student and finally a sensitive man of the world. These delicate masterworks—Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road), Aparajito (The Unvanquished), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu)—based on two books by Bibhutibhusan Banerjee, were shot over the course of five years, and each stands on its own as a tender, visually radiant journey. They are among the most achingly beautiful, richly humane movies ever made—essential works for any film lover. Blu-ray Release Date: November 17th, 2015

The Larry Fessenden Collection BD - Four tales of terror (No Telling, Habit, Wendigo and The Last Winter) from multi-talented filmmaker Larry Fessenden: he’s a writer, a producer, a director and an actor. In this box set, he brings together four of his films, in HD for the first time, along with both brand-new and vintage bonus features including short films and music videos. Blu-ray Release Date: October 20th, 2015

Heart of Midnight BD - At Midnight, the line between love and lust disappears as terror stalks the innocent! Carol (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rush) has lived on the edge of madness for as long as she can remember. Now she has inherited a run-down nightclub called The Midnight from an uncle she barely remembers, and she seizes the chance to start a new life. But Carol s dream of independence disintegrates into a nightmare, The Club's a lurid trap and something seems to be stalking Carol above the ceiling, under the floorboards, driving her closer and closer to the edge. Is the danger that haunts her real? Blu-ray Release date: October 27th, 2015

Dodge City BD - Dodge City is a 1939 western that was filmed in Glorious Technicolor starring Errol Flynn. Errol stars at Wade Hatton, the well rounded, slightly mysterious cowboy. Since the end of the Civil War, Hatton has traveled around the world and back to find himself in his current role, becoming the modern equivalent of a contractor for the US Army. He hunts buffalo for to feed the Army in it's westward movement. In his travels he has watched the evil, dark hat wearing Jeff Surrett kill Buffalo on Indian grounds and turns him over to the local Sheriff. Thus the final confrontation is set. Blu-ray Release Date: June 9th, 2015

The Hurricane BD - Framed in a flashback related by doctor Thomas Mitchell, The Hurricane is in essence the story of a struggle between individual freedom and colonial oppression. Jon Hall plays Terangi, a tempestuous native of the French-controlled island of Manakoora. After marrying childhood sweetheart Marama (Dorothy Lamour, saronged as usual), Terangi takes a job on a ship. While docked in Tahiti, Teragni is goaded into a fight by a white man - an offense punishable by a stiff prison term. French governor DeLaage (Raymond Massey) has nothing personal against the native, but he is dedicated to upholding the strict letter of the law. Even the appeals made on behalf of Terangi by doctor Mitchell, priest C. Aubrey Smith, ship's captain Jerome Cowan and the governor's own wife (Mary Astor) fail to weaken DeLaage's resolve to do his duty. Thus begins a chain of events that entangles the freedom-loving Terangi in the impenetrable web of white "justice". Blu-ray Release date: November 24th, 2015

Crypt of the Living Dead BD - After arriving on a remote island to bury his father, a young American engineer (Andrew Prine) opens the crypt of a vampire queen. He inadvertently unleashes a terrible and violent force of evil on the unsuspecting townspeople, making them fight for their lives, while a few townsfolk aren't who they appear to be. Blu-ray Release date: July, 2015

A Bullet for Joey BD - With fear of communism running rampant, Hollywood scripts of the 1950s often dealt with Soviet plots to undermine the American way of life. One example is United Artists' A Bullet for Joey (1955), starring Edward G. Robinson as a police inspector on the trail of a spy who plots to kidnap an important American atomic scientist. George Raft co-stars as the gangster who is hired to carry out the abduction - but balks when he learns what is at stake and helps the G-man keep the world safe for democracy. Blu-ray Release Date: November 17th, 2015

Slam Dance BD - In this off-beat and stylish mystery by director Wayne Wang, C.C. Drood (Tom Hulce) is an underground cartoonist who is separated from his wife Helen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and daughter Bean (Judith Barsi). When his lover Yolanda (Virginia Madsen) is found murdered, Drood is the main focus of the police investigation. When Drood uncovers a sex scandal involving police chief Gilbert (John Doe) and Detective Smiley (Harry Dean Stanton), he realizes he is being made the fall guy for the crime. Singer Adam Ant plays Drood's buddy Jim. Blu-ray Release date: October 20th, 2015

Modern Girls BD - These daring Modern Girls are in for a night of their lives, because tonight, their usual fun and games get hilariously funny and seriously dangerous when they get mixed up with a rock star; an arrogant ex-boyfriend; a pseudo-sadist and the nicest nerd in the City of Angels. Directed by music video specialist Jerry Kramer (Moonwalker) with an incredible soundtrack featuring the music of Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, Club Nouveau, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Toni Basil, The Call, T.K.A., Icehouse and many more. Co-starring Clayton Rohner (April Fool's Day) in the dual role of Clifford and Bruno X. Blu-ray Release date: October 20th, 2015

Tu dors Nicole BD - The titular character of Tu Dors Nicole is a girl cut in two, as evidenced by director Stéphane Lafleur's compositions, with Nicole (Julianne Côté) often severed by the margins of the frame. She's a wayward twentysomething, caught between her tenuous desires for independence and a more forceful reluctance to forgo the sweet pangs of juvenilia. Lafleur has a percipient eye for irrigating these dilemmas without overtly sentimentalizing them, especially as the film flirts with diagnosing Nicole's desolation as mental illness, manifest through insomnia and habitual forms of self-sabotage. Blu-ray Release date: October 27th, 2015
