ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I found some positives in all the Blu-rays I reviewed this week. Masters of Cinema's The Naked Prey looking ravishing in 1080P and I suspect that will be our top pick. BFI should get immense kudos for bringing Ousmane Sembene's Black Girl + Borom Sarret to Blu-ray from the recent restorations. Essential. I'm pretty impressed with Signal One Entertainment out of the UK - I thought The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane was a great, enigmatic, film to bring to Blu-ray and their transfers of Stanley Kramer's On the Beach and Ken Loach's Hidden Agenda - both compare favorably with the US Kino Lorber counterpart. Speaking of which KL's Blu-ray of Pabst's Diary of a Lost Girl is interestingly compared to the MoC transfer. Arrow keeps bringing out amazing Blu-ray packages and the spaghetti western Requiescant is no exception. A wonderful entry in the genre by Carlo Lizzani. Shattered is definitely an above-average thriller from Wolfgang Petersen and very reasonably priced on Blu-ray. Who can get enough of more Poe with Vincent Price? The Oblong Box also stars Christopher Lee and is drenched in Gothic English manor atmosphere - as well as being a steal of a Pre-order price at Amazon. Abel Ferrara's Pasolini provides a fresh and artistic take on the director - available on Blu-ray from BFI. And then we come to Manos: The Hands of Fate - so bad it's good? No doubt you will have fun. On DVD Eric covered 5 discs - I'm keen to see The Green Man with Albert Finney - Eyewitness also seems intriguing. We can also see the Danish drama The Legacy - Season 2, the comedies Finding Neighbors and, from Argentina, Volley.: “I'm into clothes, but in a way that's related to wanting to walk into a film noir movie. You know, I love to go to vintage stores, but mostly it's stuff that I don't have anywhere to wear... I don't have the life that goes with the clothes.”  - Maureen Dowd. Happy Turkey Days! See you next time!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Pasolini BD - Abel Ferrara's tableau of Pier Paolo Pasolini resembles a large villa. Each room we enter establishes a different angle on the filmmaker, writer, painter, thinker and prowler. He doesn't simplify anything about his subject and he has a fantastic ally in Willem Dafoe. The mistake of wrapping up a life neatly in hindsight, which is made so often by biopics, doesn't interest Ferrara. Pasolini's unfinished life remains painfully unresolved, as it should be. In a daring move, scenes from the film Pasolini was working on at the time of his murder are staged. Blu-ray Release date: October 26th, 2015

Hidden Agenda BD - This political thriller is set against the backdrop of Northern Ireland's "Troubles" and directed in the documentary fashion common to British filmmaker Ken Loach's films. Paul Sullivan (Brad Dourif) and Ingrid Jessner (Frances McDormand) are American attorneys serving on a human rights group working to monitor cases of prisoner mistreatment in war-torn Belfast. When Paul learns of some information that may be injurious to the Thatcher government, he is killed, and a top-secret tape disappears. Assigned to the case, Inspector Kerrigan (Brian Cox) is joined by Ingrid in probing Paul's death, which seems to be related to rumors of a high-ranking cabal within the British government working to undermine the Irish Republican Army and liberal policies toward Irish separatists through violent and illegal means. Signal One Blu-ray Release date: October 12th, 2015

On the Beach BD - Although there'd been "doomsday dramas" before it, Stanley Kramer's On the Beach was considered the first "important" entry in this genre when originally released in 1959. Based on the novel by Nevil Shute, the film is set in the future (1964) when virtually all life on earth has been exterminated by the radioactive residue of a nuclear holocaust. Only Australia has been spared, but it's only a matter of time before everyone Down Under also succumbs to radiation poisoning. With only a short time left on earth, the Australian population reacts in different ways: some go on a nonstop binge of revelry, while others eagerly consume the suicide pills being issued by the government. Signal One Blu-ray Release date: October 12th, 2015

The Naked Prey BD - Glamorous leading man turned idiosyncratic auteur Cornel Wilde created in the sixties and seventies a handful of gritty, violent explorations of the nature of man, none more memorable than The Naked Prey. In the early nineteenth century, after an ivory-hunting safari offends an African tribe, the colonialists are captured and hideously tortured. Only Wilde's marksman is released, without clothes or weapons, to be hunted for sport, and he embarks on a harrowing journey through savanna and jungle, back to a primitive state. Distinguished by vivid widescreen camera work and the unflinching depiction of savagery, The Naked Prey is both a propulsive, stripped-to-the-bone narrative and a meditation on the notion of civilization. Blu-ray Release Date: October 19th, 2015

The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane BD - Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster) is a smart thirteen-year-old girl who lives in a secluded house that she and her father rent. After a number of locals come calling, they find that Rynn's father is never around. Suspicions are soon raised and members of the community - including the local police officer (Mort Shuman) and the landlord's sleazy son (Martin Sheen) - make it their business to pry into Rynn's affairs. But how far will she go to hide the truth of what she has been up to? Blu-ray Release date: October 5th, 2015

The Oblong Box BD - When Sir Edward Markham (Alastair Williamson) is horribly disfigured by African natives, he is kept chained and out of sight by his brother Julian (Vincent Price). When Sir Edward escapes, he goes on a killing spree in a desperate attempt to get even with the society that has made him a monstrous outcast. Julian enlists the help of African witch doctor N'Galo (Harry Baird) for medicine to make Sir Edward appear dead so he can be evicted from the house. Dr. Neuhardt (Christopher Lee) attempts to help the hideous human. There are plenty of female corpses around to drip rivers of fresh, hot blood in this feature, the 13th Edgar Allan Poe story in which Price has appeared. Blu-ray Release date: October 20th, 2015

Black Girl + Borom Sarret BD - Ousmane Sembene's feature debut aims for the same condensed storytelling -- too much fumbled Nouvelle Vague fiddling gets in the way, yet it remains a remarkably resonant portrait of cultural (hence, spiritual) dislocation and death. Picked out of a street corner where Africans looking for work are surveyed by trendy whites in shades, the title character (Mbissine Thérèse Diop) gets transplanted from her Dakar home to the Riviera apartment of a French couple (Anne-Marie Jelinek, Robert Fontaine), where her dreams of lushness shrink as her babysitting gig balloons into a full-time stint as maid, cook, and all-around exotic trophy. Blu-ray Release Date: October 19th, 2015

Diary of a Lost Girl BD - Brooks plays Thymian Henning, an unprepossessing young woman seduced by an unscrupulous and mercenary character employed at her father’s pharmacy (played with gusto by Fritz Rasp, the degenerate villain of such Fritz Lang classics as Metropolis, Spione, and Frau im Mond). After Thymian gives birth to his child and rejects her family’s expectations for marriage, the baby is stripped from her care, and Thymian enters a purgatorial reform school that seems less an institute of higher learning than a conduit for fulfilling the headmistress’s sadistic sexual fantasies. Blu-ray Release Date: October 20th, 2015

Manos: The Hands of Fate BD - Mike (Harold P. Warren) and Maggie (Diane Mahree), on a road trip with their daughter and family dog, take a wrong turn in Texas and become trapped at a weird lodge inhabited by a polygamous pagan cult. They soon find themselves in the middle of a power struggle between caretaker Torgo (John Reynolds), cult leader The Master (Tom Neyman), and two warring factions of the Master's wives. As the family tries to escape, the worshipers of Manos decide their fate... Blu-ray Release date: October 13th, 2015

Requiescant BD - Our film opens with a slaughter and a young boy is traumatized by the killing of his family and friends. A passing pastor and his family find the boy and take him in. He is raised to be religious and in turn has become a pastor himself. All is well until one day he runs into the man that slaughtered his family and he then becomes tempted to stray from his strict religious life to get revenge! Blu-ray Release date: October 12th-13th, 2015

Shattered BD - Based on Richard Neely's novel The Plastic Nightmare, Petersen's first American feature is a credible and gripping thriller, using ambiguous clues and a complex flashback structure to draw us into the dark heart of an amnesiac maze. Berenger plays a wealthy architect whose life is shattered when he and his wife (Scacchi) plunge over a cliff in their car. Emerging from a coma, he has his face reconstructed, but his memory of the crash has been erased. When he tries to reassemble his life with the help of his wife, who was thrown clear, some pieces of the jigsaw just won't fit. Photos of Scacchi with another man lead him to private eye Hoskins, whom he had hired before the accident to spy on her infidelities with a mystery lover. Meanwhile, his partner's wife (Whalley-Kilmer) is insisting that she and Berenger had been having a torrid affair. Knowing only what Berenger knows, we share his sense of disorientation and vulnerability, while Petersen's sure-footed script and controlled direction eschew self-conscious homage for good old-fashioned adult entertainment. Blu-ray Release date: October 13th, 2015

The Green Man - Maurice Allington, the alcoholic, sexually promiscuous, and unappealing lead character owns a country inn called The Green Man. He frightens and regales his guests, when he's not trying to seduce them, with tales of ghosts and spirits haunting his hotel. The fun begins when he and they realize the haunts are real and malevolent. At times sexual farce, at others, ghostly thriller, this movie is aptly called a ghost story for adults. DVD Release Date: October 5th, 2015

Eyewitness - Two 15 year old boys secretly meet up in the forest, only to witness a blood bath. They are seen, but escape trying to keep this as a secret, both in fear of the perpetrator and that their secret is revealed. Eyewitness is a gripping, fast-paced thriller seen through the eyes of two teenagers whose clandestine meeting unravels into a nightmare of murder, corruption and gang warfare. DVD Release Date: September 14th, 2015

The Legacy - Season 2 - The Legacy is a character-driven drama series about what it means to be a family in a day and age where the classical family patterns have undergone radical change. As in season one, the second season of the series is played out with the manor, Grønnegaard located in South Funen, as the central stage. This stately home had been bequeathed to Signe by her real mother, the artist Veronika Grønnegaard. As her recently acquired siblings, Gro, Frederik and Emil, continue to be strongly attached to the manor, this complicates the situation. Gro s father, Thomas, still lives in his workmen s hut in the back garden. At Grønnegaard, tensions are strained to the breaking point by different desires and agendas. Skeletons come rattling out of the cupboards; and, once let loose, complex strategies and deep emotions are running high. DVD Release Date: July 27th. 2015

Volley - Six twenty-something friends are spending New Year's Eve at a summer house at the river. The host, Nicolas (writer and director Martin Piroyansky, XXY), brings his ex-girlfriend Pilar (Inés Efron, Empty Nest, XXY) with whom he just had a one-night stand. But, Nicolas hits on every other girl including the brooding Cata (Vera Spinetta) and the voluptuous Belén (Justina Bustos). When Nicolas unexpectedly falls into bed and then into love with the high-strung Manuela (Violeta Urtizberea) who also happens to be his best friend's girlfriend, the last laugh is on him. DVD Release Date: October 13th, 2015

Finding Neighbors - Sam Tucker, a successful stay-at-home graphic novelist, has hit a mid-life and creative crisis. Six months late on the deadline of his latest novel, Sam has already created turmoil with his publisher after his last book was a disaster. When his therapist wife Mary starts to suspect Sam of having an affair with Sherrie, his provocative and willing next-door neighbor, she's surprised to find out he's actually spending all of his time with a man. Jeff, his gay fellow 'housewife' neighbor, is a fan of Sam's published works. As his friendship with Jeff grows and he begins to recapture his creative fire, Sam finds he may be losing the one thing he never doubted: his marriage. DVD Release Date: September 22nd. 2015
