ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Hard not to be overly impressed with The Masters of Cinema's Blu-ray package of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - which, rightfully deserves our top mention. I was also quite smitten with Arrow's Stray Cat Rock Collection - a unique form of cool and remember the Blu-ray Boxset is limited to only 2,000 copies - don't delay if you are keen! Speaking of LE's don't be deceived by the cheapo European Leave Her To Heaven Blu-ray - go for the Twilight Time while still available. Night of the Comet is still appealing some 30-years later and the Arrow Blu-ray is up to their usual high standard. Blake Edwards' The Party is iconic comedy and an easy decision when Blu-ray is compared to DVD. I was deeply engrossed in Elmer Gantry viewed in a Lancaster Double Bill (in my Home theater) with the tense Run Silent, Run Deep. Both worthy Blu-ray from Kino-Lorber. Fritz Lang's Hangmen Also Die gets a restoration and Blu-ray release from Cohen. Another François Truffaut film goes 1080P with Bed and Board handily advancing over decade-old DVDs. I thoroughly enjoyed Terence Fisher's Night of the Big Heat with Cushing and Lee and although the Blu-ray is imperfect - we still encourage ownership at the right price. On SD Eric reviewed the The Changes - a long awaited DVD premiere of the influential science-fiction television series, plus Ilo Ilo - a highly rated drama out of Singapore. He also had time to add a comparison with Bicycling With Moliere - an amusing French drama - as well as Varsity Blood - whose title needs no further description! have a tremendous (and warm!) week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Night of the Big Heat BD - A freak heat wave sends the temperatures soaring on a remote island. Dr Stone (Peter Cushing) and Callum (Patrick Allen) try to uncover the mysterious reason for the sudden change in climate. But the arrival of Callum's former mistress (Jane Merrow) forces the atmosphere to boiling point and it falls to Godfrey Hanson (Christopher Lee) to discover that the rising heat is the start of an invasion of merciless aliens... Blu-ray Release date: July 28th, 2014

Run Silent, Run Deep BD - The contrasting acting styles of Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster serve to increase the already high tension level of the WW2 drama Run Silent, Run Deep. Gable plays submarine commander "Rich" Richardson, who assumes command of the USS Nerka. Because his previous sub was sunk by the Japanese under highly suspect circumstances, Richardson inspires nothing but animosity from his new crew. Particularly hostile is executive officer Lt. Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who'd assumed that he was next in line to command the Nerka. Obsessed with tracking down the Japanese destroyer that sank his old sub, Richardson drives his crew mercilessly, and even disobeys direct orders from his own higher-ups. Blu-ray Release date: September 23rd, 2014

Elmer Gantry BD - Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster), a drunken, dishonest street preacher allegedly patterned on Billy Sunday, wrangles a job with the travelling tent ministry conducted by Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons). Thanks to Gantry's enthusiastic hellfire-and-brimstone sermons, Sister Sharon's operation rises to fame and fortune, enough so that Sharon realizes her dream of building her own enormous tabernacle. These ambitions are put in jeopardy when a prostitute (Oscar-winning Shirley Jones), a former minister's daughter who'd been deflowered by Gantry years earlier, lures Gantry into a compromising situation and has photographs taken. It took several years for any Hollywood studio to take a chance with Sinclair Lewis' novel, and when it finally did arrive on the screen, producer/director Richard Brooks was compelled to downplay some of the more "sacrilegious" passages in the original. Also appearing in Elmer Gantry are Arthur Kennedy as an H.L. Mencken-style atheistic journalist, and Edward Andrews as George Babbitt, a character borrowed from another Sinclair Lewis novel. Blu-ray Release date: September 23rd, 2014

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari BD - Undoubtedly one of the most exciting and inspired horror movies ever made. The story is a classic sampling of expressionist paranoia about a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to do his murders, full of the gloom and fear that prevailed in Germany as it emerged from WWI. There are plenty of extremely boring sociological/critical accounts of the film; best to avoid them and enjoy the film's extraordinary use of painted light and Veidt's marvellous performance. Incidentally, the influence of Caligari on the cinema is much more problematic than some historians suppose. Thematically it has rarely been copied, and the style only really infiltrated in dream sequences and other odd devices. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: September 29th, 2014

Hangmen Also Die BD - Because it's been little seen, and because people tend to shrug off contemporaneous World War II films as "propaganda," Hangmen Also Die has never received its due. It's a brilliant, riveting movie, made in response to the atrocities committed against the Czech people following the assassination of Reichsprotektor Heydrich, Hitler's personal "hangman." Under Fritz Lang's ferociously stylized direction, the duel of wits between the Nazi occupiers and the Prague underground--"a ghost army sworn to haunt them till their blood runs cold"--becomes the stuff of legend: virtually another installment of Die Nibelungen, and a dynamic variation on the urban phantasmagoria of the Mabuse films and Spione and M. Blu-ray Release Date: September 9th, 2014

Stray Cat Rock Collection BD - The Stray Cat Rock series stars Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood, Blind Woman's Curse) who with these five films began her reign as the badass action queen of the era. In these five tales of rebellious youth she stars alongside the gorgeous Bunjaku Han (Love Letter) and Tatsuya Fuji (In the Realm of the Senses). In Delinquent Girl Boss, the girl gang go up against criminal organisation the Seiyu Group, following a fixed boxing match blood is shed and friendships are tested. In Wild Jumbo, Kaji and the gang get involved in a kidnapping and the robbery of a religious organisation. In Sex Hunter Kaji's girl gang go up against The Eagles, a group led by Fuji where sex and violence erupt over the treatment of half-breeds . In Machine Animal gang rivalry is once again the focus with two gangs pursuing some LSD pushers looking to move a big score. The series swansong, Beat 71, sees Kaji framed and sent to prison by her boyfriend s father and with the help of some hippies she strives to be re-united. Blu-ray Release Date: September 22nd, 2014

Leave Her To Heaven BD - Gene Tierney portrays a beautiful but unstable woman who marries successful novelist Cornel Wilde. Tierney wants to spend all her time with her new husband, but finds it impossible to do so thanks to his work and the frequent visits of family and friends. When Wilde's crippled younger brother (Darryl Hickman) comes to the couple's summer house to stay, Ms. Tierney indirectly causes the boy to drown. Later, upon discovering that she's pregnant, Tierney deliberately falls down the stairs, choosing to miscarry rather than share her husband's affections with an infant. When it becomes clear that family friend Jeanne Crain is attracted to her husband, Ms. Tierney commits suicide, making her death appear to be murder and framing Crain for the "crime." In court, Ms. Crain is mercilessly grilled by prosecuting attorney Vincent Price, who happens to be Tierney's ex-lover! Filmed in lush Technicolor, Leave Her to Heaven is based on the best-selling novel by Ben Ames Williams. Llamentol Blu-ray Release Date: May 2013

Night of the Comet BD - It’s the first comet to buzz the planet in 65 million years, and everyone seems to be celebrating its imminent arrival. Everyone, that is, except Regina Belmont (Catherine Mary Stewart, The Last Starfighter) and her younger sister Samantha (Kelli Maroney, Chopping Mall), two Valley Girls who care more about fashion trends than the celestial phenomenon. But upon daybreak, when the girls discover that they’re the only residents of Los Angeles whom the comet hasn’t vaporized or turned into a zombie, they do what all good Valley Girls do...they go shopping! But when their day of malling threatens to become a day of mauling, these gals flee with killer zombies and blood-seeking scientists in hot pursuit! Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: September 22nd, 2014

Bed and Board BD - In the fourth installment of François Truffaut's Antoine Doniel series, this romantic comedy shows how Antoine (Jean-Pierre Léaud) went from being a mischievous boy to an adorably charming young man of 26. Domicile Conjugal begins with Antoine settling down with Christine (Claude Jade), his girlfriend from the previous film, Baisers volés. He finds himself accepted and loved by his wife and her family, so the young couple move in to an apartment building together. They live in a lively neighborhood of interesting characters, such as the old man who never leaves and the opera singer who fights with his wife. Antoine finds work as a florist painting roses, while Christine makes a living by teaching violin lessons. After he gets involved in an accidental fire at the florist's, he gets a new job with an American corporation where he steers radio-controlled boats around a pond all day. Blu-ray Release Date: September 29th, 2014

The Party BD - In one of their few non-Clouseau efforts, director Blake Edwards (Victor Victoria) and star Peter Sellers (What's New Pussycat?) preserve the spirit of the French bumbler in the person of Hrundi V. Bakshi, an accident-prone Indian actor. Brought to Hollywood to play the title role in SON OF GUNGA DIN, Bakshi destroys the film's most elaborate set with his bungling and is banned from the set by the film's producer. But because of an error by the producer's secretary, Bakshi's name is added to the guest list of his next party, an A-list affair. Shortly after arriving, Bakshi begins accidentally dismantling the producer s carefully staged event, destroying a flower bed, knocking a servant through a bay window, and triggering the lawn sprinklers, soaking the his pretentious guests. Sellers is typically brilliant in a film abounding in sidesplitting sight gags with a script by Edwards, Frank Waldman and his brother Tom Waldman. Blu-ray Release Date: September 16th, 2014

Ilo Ilo - Set in Singapore during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Ilo Ilo chronicles the day-to-day drama of the Lim family - troublesome grade-schooler Jiale and his overstressed parents, Heck and Leng. Comfortably middleclass and with another baby on the way, they hire Teresa, a Filipino immigrant, as a live-in maid and nanny. An outsider in both the family and Singapore itself, Teresa initially struggles to manage Jiale's antics and find her footing in her new community. The two eventually form a unique bond, but just as Teresa becomes an unspoken part of the family, unforeseen circumstances in an uncertain economy will challenge the new normal yet again. DVD Release Date: September 16th, 2014

The Changes - When a strange noise is emitted from machinery and electricity pylons, previously placid and easy-going folk turn violently against the technology that surrounds them ruthlessly attacking radios, TVs and other domestic appliances. In the devastating aftermath, young Nicky Gore (Victoria Williams) is separated from her parents, but finds a surrogate home with a group of Sikhs. But they soon are dubbed 'The Devil's' Children by superstitious locals and Nicky is accused of sorcery by a witchfinder. In grave danger, she is forced to find a way to escape, find her parents and uncover what caused the world to become so unbalanced. This highly acclaimed series was adapted from Peter Dickinson's best-selling trilogy by Anna Home (who would later become chief executive of the Children's Film and Television Foundation), and features music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Paddy Kingsland (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Its gritty depiction of a near-apocalyptic world, and its integration of Sikh characters make it as progressive and fascinating now as it was when it was first broadcast. DVD Release Date: August 25th, 2014

Varsity Blood - The team are about to lose… their lives. A pack of muscle-headed small town jocks and their bouncy cheerleader girlfriends share a dark secret – and they’re about to share a whole lot more. It’s Halloween, and they’ve got every reason to go wild. Heading out to a remote farmhouse for a night of booze and bad behaviour, they soon find more than they’re looking for in the shape of their team mascot, an Indian warrior wielding a lethal fighting ax. One by one they will fall victim to a killer who is about to learn: a dead cheerleader can be pretty… bloody. DVD Release Date: August 18th, 2014

Bicycling With Moliere - Serge (Fabrice Luchini, In the House) is a retired great actor, living as a recluse amid the windswept landscape of the Île de Ré. Gauthier (Lambert Wilson, Of Gods and Men), a fellow actor currently enjoying a career high as a TV heart-throb, visits Serge and tempts him to make a comeback with a production of Molière's play 'The Misanthrope'. Before agreeing, Serge insists on seven days of rehearsal and the two soon find themselves at each other's throats. Warm and witty, with intelligence in spades, this likable French comedy about two arrogant yet affable middle-aged men is like a French version of The Trip. DVD Release Date: August 25th, 2014
